  • Which Vitola ?

Now we all have our favourite vitolas which we prefer to smoke. But the question here, probably applies more to all of the NC aficionados here rather than Cuban, just because of the vast range and sizes of NC smokes available, but I'm sure this still applies to some extent to Cuban marques too!

When you are trying a new range of cigars, what is the size/vitola that, if available, is your "go to" for seeing if that range within a marque will be good or bad smokes? plus what is the reasoning behind you choosing that particular vitola as the yardstick? Or is it simply down to "pot luck" stumbling across that unicorn in that particular vitola.

Personally for me, it seems the robusto and or possibly toro, both seem to be the sizes I tend to go for that initial sampler within a range. If I really like the cigars, I usually seek out a skinny like a lancero as I think a really good lancero my favourite vitola is so difficult to make and not one to take pot luck with

I have the exact thought patterns you have. I had seen numerous references to Robustos and Toro’s generally being the vitolas that blenders blend to initially to get the blend perfect. From there they try different sizes to create the subtle variations of a particular blend.

I also enjoy a skinny so like to try a Lancero version if I can get my hands on one.

I tend towards the same normally a Robusto but that's usually because with NC's these days they're the smallest they roll. Or just from others recommendations.

As soon as I see loads of vitolas of the same blend I'm a bit wary though as it can tend to come across as a way of just making money rather than focusing on what size that blend suits. Plenty of options that prove that it can still work though!

I love a robusto... or a petit robusto or something a few gauges up from there... I enjoy skinnies, but dont enjoy them as much. Although the 'sipping' tip I had from Simon Bolivar years ago did substantively shift my enjoyment of the thinner smokes.

Cant roll a robusto well? probably not a marqua for me....

Its weird... the lancero gets a lot of love... and the fans of skinnies are the natural balance to the jaw cracker brigade! the more one comes to the fore, the more the other seems to thrive.

While the 'craft' of a skinny is often quoted, I imagine maintaining constant balance in a +50g anything is similarly difficult. Not better/ worse just different.

52 is probably my limit... however I do enjoy the odd whiff...

Toro. Mostly because smaller cigars frequently leave me wanting for more. However, if various sizes are available, I try to sample most of them and sometimes find different sizes bring very different flavours. Once I identified which I like beat5, I don't care about the format, flavour is the most important thing to me.

I like petit coronas, robustos, corona gordas, pyramids, perfectos, Lanceros and Double Coronas. And the odd NuB.

The NC I generally go for are the robustos....they generally are the cigars I enjoy the most with time always being an issue.

Depends on the cigar honestly, someone new world Toros are samey and lack transition, recently smoked a Paul Stulac White Blinding Light and it was nothing special, the lancero however....

Cubans I can and will smoke any vitola as they're a joy.

Probably have more corona(gorda) than anything currently, slow smoker and they last me as long as I need them too.
