  • What to do with a bad box?

I've had a box of Monte 3s that have smoked like absolute crap for the last couple of years. Every time I have one I give them the benefit of the doubt and leave them a couple more months to improve...but of course they never do. I think I've had 8 or 9 now... all with construction issues. Just a bad experience every time. Question is, what to do with them? They cost me a pretty penny so I'm loath to get rid of them but life is too short to smoke a crap cigar. What do you guys do with a bad box?

Are they in any way consistent? As in all too loose or too tight?

Short of having bought off a vendor who will do something about it your options are pretty limited.

Only a couple were completely plugged but the rest have smoked badly, either too tight or that kind of weird thing where a cigar just doesn’t seem to produce much smoke (if you know I mean?), the last one’s wrapper unwound about 1/2 way through. I’ve used a perfect draw but even though I could finish them, they were not enjoyable. I thought it was a humidity thing at first but I’m certain it’s not now. Just bad luck I guess. I’m not too upset as it’s the nature of a handmade product but it’s difficult to know what to do with them as I certainly won’t be smoking anymore from the box for the foreseeable. Guess I’ll save them for giveaways

Have you tried dry boxing at 58rh for about a month? That’s the advice I’ve seen for similar issues. I’ve got a box of Monte 4 that need to be dry boxed for a few days to get them going.

Based on what you've said I'd echo Midas and dry box. Personally I would just try one or two in a sealed box for 3-5 days before and then give them a go.

Won't fix unraveling but it can definitely help open up a lot of cigars.

I had similar with a box of Monte no 4
almost all were plugged or rolled too tight
I ended dry boxing and removing the rings but they still were poor

Good idea, I will try this- just in Tupperware with a boveda?

Hopefully some prolonged dry boxing will make a difference for mine as has been suggested. Thanks chaps, will report back in a few weeks

Yea, small Tupperware and Boveda. Maybe try putting 3 or 4 in and smoking one every week or so, if it works you know how long to dry box each of the others for next time.

With boveda you’ve got a wet box not a dry one! Unless you have low rh boveda

It would be an interesting experiment to see whether a number of members here, experienced the same difficulties and how they resolved them?
