  • What's the future for cigars in the UK?

I guess like me, most of you bought most of your cigars on trips abroad and especially on trips to Europe. With Brexit this will be highly limited now, so many will face spending more money or smoking less in future.

But what does mean for new smokers? People that tried one at a wedding maybe and liked it. Will they be willing to spend premium prices for something they haven't gotten properly into yet?

My guess is that cigar smoking in the UK will fade out over time. What do you think?

Can only speak for myself but Brexit is why I have spent the last few years accumulating ..... if I only purchased at UK prices I couldn't afford to smoke cigars. I will miss little jaunts over to the continent to stock up.

Doesn't really affect me as much as max I've purchased 4 boxes of 25 which would still be the allowances between my and my wife.

We’re still allowed 50 per person which for most is more than enough especially as most of us don’t travel alone a huge amount.

It has closed off a couple of routes but I suspect though it makes things slightly more awkward for us we’ll still keep buying them. No idea how much people like us make up of the market but I suspect it’ll have no discernible impact to cigar smoking as a whole in the U.K

Just an observation, but cgars seem to be growing year on year. There seem to also have been more new cigar sellers pop up over the past couple of years. So not the sign of a dying market.

The prices even over the last couple of years have gone up 20-50% here. For cubans at least. There's a lot more push to fill the market with new world brands.

I've also bought the bulk of what I'll need for now. So buying a lot less anyhow. But yes I wonder how the market will continue. Are there enough rich folk!?

Guess you all know of my struggle to bring over my collection over bit by bit, to minimise hte final amount I'll have to pay in duty when we move house. Once settled & re-organised I'll be set up for life! However as a tip & I mean this most sincerely, over the last 5yrs I have hardly bought anything in the EU, most of my buys have been from members on this group - seriously prices don't get better & they usually come with a few yrs on them as well!

When do you expect to repatriate then Simon, and to where?

I think we might see a lot more NC cigars coming to the market, especially smaller brands doing deals with independent shops. Personally I think that a lot of the Cuban cigars are overpriced in the UK, especially when you can get equally good, and sometimes better NC cigars for a lot less

I think the future of travelling will be clearer once covid restrictions are lifted, I'm more than happy to day trip to the EU 2-3 times a year to stock up. Like many if smoking at uk cuban prices, id probably sell up 😪

I told you before Simon, no stress. Everything you are not able to take to the UK I will gladly ‘store’ for you in Belgium. Lol

It’s an interesting question. I think with the connections we all now have on and through this forum, we’re all in pretty good hands to grow our own collections. That of course is us, not the entire UK cigar smoking population (although the best are clearly on here, that’s why we’ve got friends from the EU on here 🤪). I reckon you could source almost anything through friends on here.

There’s always been a high barrier to entry for UK residents but I suppose if it really does become a passion, it doesn’t take much Googling to find a community like this one.

Hi PJ, We are planning to put the house on the market in May & hop to move over Sept/Oct. We will be moving to the Bournemouth area, within half an half an hr of the town centre to be close to our daughter, the Dorset Stour & Hampshire Avon. Vitola is just up the road & my family about an hr+ away.Perfect spot, shame about the house prices though, I'll be raiding my pension for a tax free lump sum to make up the difference between what we get for selling in Belgium & buying in UK.

Does mean I should be able to attend herfs again, London or West of should be possible with planing.
