  • Cut Above The Rest

Over the years as I’ve smoked cigars I have tended to stick to certain cuts for certain ring gauges and Vitolas. For example a punch for 75% of smokes and v cut for pyramids. But more recently I’ve found that trying a different cut with your usual smoke can dramatically improve the flavours -

For example:- I was smoking a Rocky Patel and it was an ok smoke - I punched as usual. The cigar was getting a bit boring/meh! And then I did a straight cut 1/2 way through smoking it - wow! dramatic improvement in the flavours. By the way I’m not talking about the draw - that’s not the point of this post.

I thought it worth mentioning, when posting on “what you’re smoking today” it might be a good idea to post the cut you used, especially if you really enjoyed the smoke.....

I only have one cutter, but I often cut again, sometimes even twice, if there's some tar build up. It opens up the cigar again and I often have some of the best drags right after the cut.

Interesting, like you I cut certain vitolas and RG in certain ways. I’ll try mixing it up and see what happens. Definitely a nice idea to note the cuts on our daily thread and also if it made a positive difference.

Good point to raise Al, I usually punch first & cut piramides but I think we can tend to struggle with the draw before considering cutting again, perhaps doing so sooner would improve flav's too; I'll give it a try.

I usually start with a V cut and then straight cut for the final third.

If after I first V cut the draw is too tight I’ll try and cut again making an X cut? Not sure if that’s even a thing but it works, I usually don’t straight cut at all after doing this.
