  • Splitting cigars

I have noticed that whilst smoking the occasional cigar develops a split in the wrapper below the burn line and usually in the bottom half of the cigar, this isn't contained to any specific marque and doesn't effect the smoking in any way but I'm curious as to why this happens.
my own thoughts are perhaps a storage problem although my humidors are all pretty consistent or that it's the way I'm smoking could certain cigars get too hot and expand and split.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

High humidity. What are you storing at?

The cigars are taken out of humidors which are at a consistent 64/66% and whatever I'm going to smoke in the coming week are kept in a humibag with a bovida pouch so I assume they are still at the same percentage

        There's that word ... Assume ...

Try dry boxing rather than the bag. Or even at that level of humidity, smoke straight out of the humidor.

        Is temperature also stable?

How fresh are they any age on them at all or any consistency there? It can take some time to properly dry out a smoke after rolling

This is what I don't understand, having bought multiples of the same cigar and put maybe 3 or 4 of them in the bag to smoke one might split and the others will be fine, they're all NC and of differing sizes I also put a digital hygrometer in the bag first thing today and it currently reads 66

I tend to keep my NC at a slightly higher humidity that I may be having an effect on them. Generally I keep them at 69 and have never had issues with either burn or cracking

Thanks for the responses I'll try upping the moisture level and see what happens

I think it's the other way round pal.... Reduce the humidity. An overly wet cigar will almost always swell up when heated.... The steam has to go somewhere!
