  • Retronasal?

How often, if at all, do you exhale through the nose when smoking a cigar? I find that flavours become more intense and I get more nuances through the nose, so I smoke retronasal most of the time. How about you?

Probably about 1/3rd of the time. Couldn't do that on freshies or NC's though.

I always retrohale every cigar but I'd guess maybe only 1 in 6 or something puffs are a retro

Also inhale smoke from the air through the nose!

I try nowadays with every cigar, very diluted smoke though first as its often too much for me! But some cigars are just smooooth.

I think I may finally have this CAD under control...

I get more from doing this than retrohaling. Tend to get a lot of the peppery spice from the retro more than any particular flavours.

The trick is to retro hale very small quantities mixed with air from your lungs. When smoking a very strong cigar, this still works, but may take a bit of practice to get the dosage right. The flavours are different from smelling the smoke in the room. When retro haling we combine the taste of our mouth buds with the smell through the nose. If you smell the room smoke, you only get the nose part.

Same here, retrohaling I only really get pepper so I don't do it much.

I probably retrohale far too much, but as Niela says mixing the retrohale with air from your lungs. If you just blow the smoke out your mouth you just don’t get the full mix of flavours, aromas and finish with just the mouth.

you do have to train your nose to retrohale over time - and keep your nasal passages clear. I use a saline solution regularly which helps keep your sinuses clear and toughens the delicate membrane of the nose lining over time

Same here, only started to do this on purpose recently

I retrohale just about every puff, occasionally the whole thing if the cigars smooth enough. It's something I have to consciously try not to do, just when I'm exhaling, I'll close my lips and move my tongue around etc. which causes the smoke to pass through my nose instead as I breath out.

But whenever I do think about it and just blow it out of my mouth, I never get the same flavour/intensity and I'm usually disappointed.

I’m still getting used to it tbh, I’ve passed the coughing stage so there’s definitely progress 😂

I only came across this phrase a couple of days ago. Watched a video on YouTube about it. Gave it a shot with a CAO Flathead 770... and it made me have tears in my eyes 😂 I feel like I need much more practice with.

Im currently really struggling to identify flavour notes so am hoping this technique will help.

Start with mild cigars, build up in strength as you get used to doing it.

The thing is I always smoke full bodied cigars so think it’d be strange to step down...

Try a more mild cigar you may not like them that much initially but retrohaling the smoke will really help you taste the nuances of the smoke. You might just find smoking them that way you enjoy smoking them more as well as helping develop your palette
