I'm surprised he didn't consider them a sign of homosexuality, what with the phallic shape of a cigar... (culebras excepted of course )

      Good find.

There's so many good pieces in their archives, it's trying to find the time to read them.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that he said "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar"

Sometimes a cigar is just a phallus. Every word of this essay is true, by the way, except the parts I disagree with.

I find it interesting that you should say that. Tell me about your mother.

Oh, and to clarify the "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" quote, my understanding is that he was talking with a colleague about the unconscious significance behind the things we say and do. The colleague said something along the lines of "what about that cigar you're smoking then?", alluding to the potential for phallic symbolism, to which Freud replied "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

I think there's some ambiguity as to whether this really happened though, or is just a bit of folklore.
