I went to Exeter at the weekend and stayed in a hotel next to a really nice pub with a big garden on the river Exe. To my disgust the entire garden of at least 1/2 an acre was non-smoking, not even a little corner for us. On my way through town I came across The City Gate which is a Youngs pub and boutique hotel which advertised a walled garden at the rear. I asked at the door if I could smoke and was directed to the very rear of the garden, Expecting a small secluded corner I was delighted to find that we got at least half of the garden with plentiful seating including three outdoor sofas. The only codicil was that you ordered your first drinks at the door but thereafter you had to use the Youngs app which was actually easy and quick once set up. They even have a humidor on the bar. I didn't look inside but the humidity reading was spot on. And they serve amazing sausage sandwiches with fried onions and mustard mayo.
