  • Spit or Swallow?

Recently while on holiday I was herfing with a fellow BOTL who had a nasty habit of spitting at various times during the course of the cigar.
In the end I had to ask why?

Turns out, that although he was enjoying the cigar immensely he found at times the tastes to be overly bitter and left a nasty taste in the mouth which he had to spit out. The idea to swallow, like many had never been an option for him although he had done a few times before by accident.

My only thought was the build up of tar was the cause and I suggested 'purging' the cigar. I'd briefly read about this once and offered it to him as a solution.
He has never looked back since and no longer feels the need to spit, much to the appreciation of those around him at the time.

Despite the negative social aspects of this bad practice has anyone ever done one or the other in the comfort of your own home (outside of course).

I'm sorry, I'm a little confused (don't worry, it happens often), let me get this straight.

You offered to help some guy 'purge' his 'cigar' (interesting euphemism), he found the taste 'bitter' and is now wondering if it's OK to spit??

Live and let live, I say.

Sorry, I'm not helping am I?

Quite right. If you don't intend to go through with something then don't start in the first place!

Tell him to smoke decent cigars ...or just grow a pair.

Well I'd never heard of the term, but have found this - http://puffingcigars.com/cigar-faq/h...e-a-cigar/777/

I'm not necessarily convinced this 'reverse blow' (oo-er) stuff would work as it assumes that you can push tar build up in the unsmoked tobacco (if indeed that happens, I guess the theory of the unsomoked tobacco acting like a filter makes sense) the reverse way with a few puffs.

But as was pointed out spitting is a dirty habit. Why wasn't he smoking with a coffee or a brandy or something to hand to sip inbetween puffs like most people do and that would seem to be a sensible solution to any tar in the mouth?

There is always the third option of gargling, of course you have to be very very talented and experienced to pull it off with an appreciative smile without gagging.

                    hey boss,
interesting topic!!!! when i started smoking cigars, i used to spit once or twice during the course of a cigar for the same reasons!!! i discovered that purging the cigar reduced the need to do this (purging is kinda like cleaning the cigar out i suppose)........but the real discovery for me was slowing down smoking!!! i used to try and race through, say......a robusto, in about 40mins!!! now, i smoke a cigar for as long as it takes!!! if i don't have the time, i don't smoke!!! also, a nice drink, not necessarily alcoholic (though it works for me) helps cleanse the mouth of any bitter taste, thus removing the need to spit!!!!

here's more info from doc stogie fresh:
Doc demonstrates how to purge your cigar. This technique will keep your cigar smoking fresh and sweet and enhance your enjoyment of your cigar.

                    hope this helps.......

I dont ever feel the need to spit. If I purge a cigar properly then it does not tend to get bitter. If it does, which happens rarely, I put it down.
What would I know? I'm just a backwoods roo packin crim from New Holland! LOL. (Thankyou El Cat)

On a completely unrelated theme, what Mr Cummings got up to:

British intelligence services experimented with using semen as an invisible ink to write top-secret letters, it has been disclosed.

I purge my cigar about every 3rd, it also helps detect flavours if you purge when your tastebuds become dulled.

I read an article of purging once, cant for the life of me remember were, it stated to blow through the cigar for a few seconds quite hard, but not hard enough to blow up the cheeks. Tried this a few times and it did help to remove any built up bitterness.
