  • Disappointment of careful selection.

Discussion of favourite cigars etc got me to thinking of the downer I had tonight on selecting my Friday evening smoke.
I was sitting with a nice large glass of Laphroaig and had decided on a lovely bolivar royal corona. I pulled the box out of the humi. Last one, been there about a year. Joy.....nope.
Don't know about everyone else, but I'm a picky bastard. When I go to a box I don't just pick out the first one I see. I examine it, the look, the feel etc. I want every one to be the best one. Sometimes, if its a new box I,ll start with the one with the slightly ragged foot or the more unsightly veins, but the feel has to be right. Sadly, tonight was a let down. Looked perfect, smelled good. Now the touch test........nooooo, a knot, halfway down. The sinking feeling that all is not well.
Snipped the end and....yup, tight as a ducks ar*e. Anyway, applied the flame, smoked about half an inch and binned it before all the blood vessels in my cheeks gave up. (had the flaw been nearer an end would probably have cut it off and carried on)
Consoled myself with an excellent party short, but just goes to show that even 1 bad one in a box can cause so much disappointment. On the plus side, my selection process works, but must remember to check them all when it gets down to the last few to avoid expectations being buiilt then dashed.

Sorry to hear that, I'm exactly the same. Even if the second one you pick sometimes is great it can still put a dampner on the whole experience that night

      Plugged Puros!

This is very odd. I've probably smoked over 2 dozen boxes of the Boliver RCs over the last few years with nary a problem - a go-to puro for me.

On the other hand, I have come up against a Cohiba Siglo VI from a half exhausted box that was as plugged as senor Spud's behind!

I guess even the best puros come up short sometimes.

Thank God for the Draw Poker....saved the puro!

Yup, to clarify things, the Boli is one of my favoutites too and its unfair that it got to me tonight. Its probably the first RC I've hadwith this prob, but I've had it on occasion with others.
Didn't mean to single any particular cigar out, just the general feeling when expectations are dashed.

Sorry to hear about that. I had tough draws on two of my Mag 50s which ruined the whole experience - despite the fantastic taste. Oddly enough I have never had a draw issue with any of my NCs (even the many foul ones I had in the past!?).

              hey lionhound,
a word of advice (i received on here a long time ago), if you feel a knot, gently massage it and purge the cigar (blow through it)!!! this works for me, it at least opens the cigar up a little more so it can be smoked!!! i've even on occasion smoked up to the plug and them used my xikar to snip off the offending part!!!

it's a shame you had to bin it though!!!! especially a bolivar RC (like the psd4, one of the most reliable cigars in my experience)!!!

              all the best,

              alex
