Not sure if he counts as a Great Living Englishman, but the BBC Foreign Affairs correspondent John Simpson has written about his love of cigars - Upmann No.2 were his favourite I seem to remember.

Agreed. Think of him what you will but if he was never pictured in public without a stogie on the go you would have to imagine that cigar sales in this country would probably be 100% higher than current levels.

              .... because he's reluctantly given-up.

And, if you can, you must!

                  Rod.

I read about John Simpson's conversion to the way of the cigar when he was offered a great one after a dinner with fellow intellectuals in Cuba.

I think it's fantastic that a respected journo becomes a man of the cigar faith after one stick. Much like our own Deano, and no doubt many others.

We need respected English reporters like John Simpson - and world-respected football players such as Beckham - to 'come out' about cigars.

If I were ever famous, I'd blab on about how much I'm into cigars to Piers Morgan, and cleverer people.

Sir Trevor McDonut is another newscaster with a soft-spot for stogies, although he's now given up. Saw him resisting temptation on a visit to the EL factory during his series on The Caribbean.

Whilst on the subject/profession, I bet Reggie Bosanquet would have been another aficionado.

IIRC Brosnan was born in the rep of Ireland, therefore invalidating his status as a UK cigar smoker!
