Not sure if he counts as a Great Living Englishman, but the BBC Foreign Affairs correspondent John Simpson has written about his love of cigars - Upmann No.2 were his favourite I seem to remember.

I read about John Simpson's conversion to the way of the cigar when he was offered a great one after a dinner with fellow intellectuals in Cuba.
I think it's fantastic that a respected journo becomes a man of the cigar faith after one stick. Much like our own Deano, and no doubt many others.
We need respected English reporters like John Simpson - and world-respected football players such as Beckham - to 'come out' about cigars.
If I were ever famous, I'd blab on about how much I'm into cigars to Piers Morgan, and cleverer people.

Whilst on the subject/profession, I bet Reggie Bosanquet would have been another aficionado.
