  • Of Being a S/BOTL, and redoubled thanks to Rokkitsci

It's been a year or so now since I began this now great journey down tobacco road (mile one marked with a Monetecristo 4), and of late I've been a bit contemplative on the whole subject. When I started smoking cigars in earnest, it came as a surprise; I'd always thought them somewhat terrible and contrary objects, and that is probably due to the proverbial trifecta of having my first cigar too early, smoking a terribly cheap example, and inhaling its smoke as if it were a cigarette. Choking and nausea don't tend to make for great first dates, unless it takes place in French cinema.

In any case, the second, and perhaps better, surprise was the level of community I've found within this realm of leaf, flame, and smoke, and it is that which has got me thinking. When I first saw this term 'BOTL', I wondered what liquid containers had to do with cigars, but I soon learned the acronym, and thought it interesting if a bit obscure or even, I don't know, Masonic. But it turned out that it wasn't all that Dan Brownish in the end, and I've found such a great outpouring of shared knowledge, experience, and, to say the least, cigars.

I recall early on in this board when I posted someone's negative review of the Cohiba Robusto, and to my surprise Rokkitsci ups and sends me an avalanche of sticks, including three phenomenal Cohibas, the bastard. I didn't know what to think, and felt a bit small in the face of it. Since then, I've risen to the occasion and seen that what Rokkitsci did was introduce me to two things: 1) some fantastic cigars that I probably would have taken years to getting around to, and 2) what you might call an ethos of the cigar community, a sense that giving, sharing, and participating in the process is just as pleasurable and important to enjoying cigars as simply smoking one is. I'd go a bit further and say that being a part of the community actually improves upon the act of smoking, if only because that act is now joined to the knowledge you've gained, perhaps, from hearing about the cigar, or from the fact that the cigar was gifted to you unexpectedly. Or, maybe even more so, it might be because you enjoyed it and are now thinking of someone else who ought to share in the experience. I've yet to personally meet anyone on these forums, but I know it happens, and that can't but add to the experience. I have definitely begun the pleasurable process of sending out sticks to others;it was a hoot, and I'm going to do it again.

So I suppose I thought I'd share my thoughts here and see if you have some of your own on what it means to be a part of a Sister/Brotherhood of the Leaf, to have a sense that you are a part of a community rather than one who simply partakes in cigars. All thoughts are by definition welcome.

    hi soulmanure
i have only been on this forum for a little while and smoking cigars since march ,when i was taken to cuba by my girlfriend (thank you marie). i've just read your post and could not agree more. yeaturday i recieved my BOTL award and outstanding newbie award , sat in my truck after a hard days graft turning on my computer and finding these put such a smile on my face and it made my day. it is only a small thing but being accepted in to this community where i have learned so much and laughed out load at the various going ons, has become something i look forward to every time i turn on my computer.

the sharing of knowledge is a great thing in any form and the way it is done on here i have never come accross before and i am glad i am part of it.

      here here!
Being a BOTL is something that isnt just linked to a site..but to a community and a family. Each time popping in here is like going into your local pub youve been at for many years..with old faces full of smoke..to newer ones who dont know whats hit them!
      love it!

Yep. It is most certainly a good place to be.
I feel like I've got mates that I've never met.
Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.

Very well said Soul. This worldwide brotherhood is something you have to be in to believe. Only tonight I got a tweet from Sam Leccia, he has rolled me a Nub with my name on it. Even though he's very busy at the vegas show, he took the time to do that and send it back with the UK distributer for me . Were else on earth would something like that happen

As for George, when I first started with cigars and joined this forum, not only did he send me some cigars to start me off, he sent me the humidor to keep them in. I need to do something for that, I'm trying to work around getting a humidor and passing it on to a member, who can keep it and pass it along when he upgrades. Let me work out how to do it and sort out the "Rokkitsci Humidor", kind of like a scholarship for newbies

Like satch said, I have mates I've never met

These are some nice examples of what I was thinking about. That George is a true BOTL, and you'll have to post some pics of your one of a kind Nub. How cool is that!

Just last weekend I met the one and only great BOTL Boss Hog in Midtown Manhattan
and spent a wonderful day with him and his brother Steve (also a BOTL ) . No other way to describe it as the UK and USA took NYC by storm. I'll bet we traveled at least 4 miles from shop to shop to restaurant and down to Time Square. This was a meeting of guys who only chat on the internet and it was like we grew up together. Man I can tell you this The day was far from boring. And wish there were more hours in that day. The one thing that really stuck in my head (Hard to believe) was Boss picking up a 3 pack of Chubby's from Davidoffs for one of the UK BOTL. So with this said B/SOTL
Don't ever give up the right to smoke cigars.

Ive smoked the odd cigar now and again over the years, a solitary thing with nothing in common with anyone else.. Then one day i was directed to join this community by Nic Wing via facebook. And here we are, an amazing community of fellow S/BOTL's, from this comes friendship, humour, honesty and trust... I say trust because on occasions we send things to others, we buy things from others and even money when you make a purchase passes from one person to another. Yet probably the majority have never met. You wouldnt step outside and give money to a stranger and say can you buy this and send it to me, because you would never see the money or the person again.. Yet here.. in this community, theres trading, buying, swapping and Trust... Isnt this just fantastic..
