  • Favo(u)ring a particular cigar hue

Sorry, but I haven't been posting on here recently as much as I'd like (smack bottom) which could be a mixed blessing...

I am favouring darker, maduro-type cigars at the moment as I prefer their earthy, richer and sometimes sweeter* flavours. I also prefer the less anaemic look.

I wonder if anyone else prefers a particular colour cigar or if it's just me.

    *all characteristics IME

I prefer darker Naturals and Maduros, never really been a fan of lighter wrappers, though the Man o War Virtue is great.

Not because of the taste, but aesthetically I prefer the a dark brown leathery colour. Dunno why, just looks nice!

Just me for the Claro and Colorado then just seem to prefer the vanilla, although still new to this game so maybe as my palate matures so will my choice.

Im sorry, but there is such a small correlation between wrapper color and taste that its not worth using that as a measuring stick.
I think Dave Rave got it right. This is about perception.

I have a very limited experience with cigars compared to most on here, hence the IME clause, but I reckon you're right.

The darker warppers I've smoked also seemed to be better made and be less inclined to split, but again that's probably down to limited experience. The maduro wrappers do look more oily though, which may have something to do with it?

It's interesting that others prefer the darker side too.

Aesthetically, I prefer the dark brown looking maduros. There's something quite manly about them. However, it can go too far, and I'm not a fan of the almost black oscuro wrappers - they look slightly odd and almost artificial.

That said, there's nothing wrong with the look of a very smooth Connecticut shade wrapper - but they do have to be smooth; the problem with lighter wrappers being that every little wrinkle, vein and seam is far more distinct than on a darker wrapper.

I started off with light shade cigars such a Don Diego & Ashton Magnums, Then I had a PAdron 3000 MAddy. WOW!!! I never turned back.

The darker the wrapper the better for me

This is true for habanos; I'm not sure when it comes to NCs?

i have been gettin cigars with a dark wrapper over the last couple of weeks..due to having my first rocky patel 1990.
i might be wrong but there seems to be only a few cuban cigars with dark wrappers...is this the case?

please excuse my ignorance still getting to know my way around this fantastic hobby/subject/addiction

That's a very interesting response from someone who (I imagine) knows a helluva lot more about cigars than most of us here.

Personally I have always found the wrapper to make a fair amount of difference to a cigar, with darker, thicker wrapper making the cigar more full-bodied and usually more bitter (why I prefer light or colorado wrappers).

I also remember an experiment Rob did a while ago involving changine the wrapper on a Genios and a Siglo VI, finding they seemed almost exactly the same cigar.

I'd be interested to hear your more of your thoughts Drew P.

I certainly like the dark maduro variety. Certainly brings out the sparkle in the ash! But yes, I have grown to enjoy the stronger variety. I think its probably the wide range of focused flavours.
