  • Not finishing a cigar

What's the general consensus in regards to not finishing a cigar and saving it for another day?

    "Blasphemy" I hear you cry!

I'm new to smoking and smoking cigars. There's been times when I couldn't finish it due to time constraints or it simply being too much for me. I've heard that its fine to come back to it within the hour but any longer and the flavours are ruined?

I'm trying to pick milder cigars and in sizes that I find more comfortable to start with.

Don't do that, if you don't have time don't have it. You don't want to put it out either and come back for it. It will taste like charred crap if left too long. If it has gone out for a short time relighting it isn't a problem.. It actually happens now and again with some cigars..

Oh and if it is too much try eating something heavy before smoking it, I assure you won't have problems..

Obviously with a 'premium' cigar you really don't want to be leaving any...!!!

        That said, it sometimes happens...

What I do is blow through the cigar to get rid of any smoke that can potentially leave a stale taste and then I leave the cigar to go out. Then if I know Im not going to be going back to the cigar anytime soon I pop it into an old cigar tube...

You will want to smoke the remainder fairly soon though, the longest I have left a cigar like this is a day...

DO NOT put it back into a humidor as this will almost definetely taint the other cigars...

Im sure some of the other guys will be along to give you their thoughts/views...

        Hope this helps...!?!

        Cheers, HabanoSy

I also use a tube when I am walking if we stop half way for a meal (as we did today) but I would not want to leave a stick for more than a few hours tops. As Sy said never back in the humi as they will stink.

Best to have a selection of vitolas and pick the right size for the time you have.

Sometimes i plan on taking the dog for a walk for an hour or 2 and smoke a cigar, either the dog has other plans or the weather changes resulting in me returning to the house with a half smoked cigar. If i don't feel like finishing it off in the garden i will knock the ash off completely or clip it and store it in an airtight tube and generally do my best to smoke it the next night. It does affect the taste initially but not in a catastrophic way. I generally smoke NCs when walking the dog and i would never try it with an expensive CC. I find lighting the cigar and blowing through it a few times removes the majority of altered flavours.

I'm a tight northerner at heart and smoke my cigars to the nub lol.

If the cigar is overwhelming have something sugary as this will help counteract nicotine. A chocolate bar or a glass of coke (not diet) (with optional rum) i find in perfect.

I am smoking as much as I can then I'm just throwing it away
otherwise I am losing the whole idea and all pleasure if i keep it and try to relight it again later on
and lets face it , it is all about the pleasure!!!

I agree with everyone's comments on the 'not leaving a half smoked stick for too long'. There has been some (as already mentioned) where re-lighting is an issue. If it is not too long after the flame has gone out, and you manage to scrape most of the ash away, then relighting does tend to enhance some of the flavours (though would depend on the cigar type).

Agreed. And agreed too on not smoking on an empty stomach ..... though I find it best to allow at least half an hour after eating before lighting up.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Try smoking shorter cigars. our lovely sponsor has a selection of dog walkers that are in general nice short less than 30 min smokes
