  • How long out of the humidor...

We have many long and learned discussions here about setting up and maintaining humidors and the correct humidity and temperature to keep cigars at for best smoking pleasure and ageing but I don't recall any mention about how long to keep cigars out of the humidor before smoking.

I was listening to an interview I did with one of the old hands of the UK cigar business last night and in it he mentioned that he usually took his cigars out of the humidor some considerable time before smoking them.

This allowed them to dry a little and to stay lit and draw better.

    Any thoughts?

    What do you do?

Do you have issues if you smoke one straight out of the humidor if you are keeping yours stored at 68% - 70%?

I prefer to get 'em out in the morning and settle, ready for smoking in the evening. Room temprature seems to make them burn better.

i usually 3 or 4 sticks out and smoke the over the following few days - i find the overall flavour improves with this little routine.

I was told once by someone in the know that you should always dry box your maduros for about 24 hours before you want to smoke them.

As if by magic works every time and as expected he was right (again)

I got the same advice as Boss, and from the same person, and yes he was right lol. The cigar i have on the ride home i leave in my leather case all day on a sunny window bottom, seems to really make the flavours come out.

Dry Box (that's what she said!)

Ahem! I generally smoke 'em straight from TJ's massive humidor. But then again, the himidity outside the box is the same as inside....heeeeeeere in Staaaaaate of Mind, Mexico.

I just smoke them straight out the humidor. I must admit I'd not considered leaving them out to get dry. I would have thought that went against the whole point of storing them in the humidor to start with. I will try it in the future though!

Some interesting points here. I hadn't considered taking out and dry boxing unless I knew there were some issues with my sticks that required it: like them being over humidified being an obvious one.

I can see the benefits of an increased relative temperature outside the humi, adding to the flavour element. It would be interesting to hear of some temperature controlled experiments Dave. (who said that?)

I've tried the same brand and vitola of cigar straight out, 10 mins, 30mins, 1 hr, 2hr, 4 hr and 8hr out in the past and haven't been able to discern any difference, so I just smoke them straight out.
