  • When is it okay?

    Hi

After introducing myself in the 'Meets & Greets' (thanks for all the welcomes) I have a newb question about the etiquette of smoking in public?

So far I have just smoked my cigars while walking along the coast with just my gf with me. I am having a break in a couple of weeks in the Peak District and would really like to sit in a nice English pub garden with a nice pint of strong bitter and have nice cigar. I know its acceptable to smoke cigarettes in the gardens but is it ok to smoke cigars? Or do people / pub owners frown upon it?

Am I just being too sensitive to the over PC ideals of some? Has anyone had bad reactions to smoking in public places?

you have just as many rights as anyone else, im happy to smoke openly as you should be, you will be suprised at how many people will comment on the smell of your stogie.

    Just be yourself...

Cheers, never smoked in an English pub garden since the smoking ban was introduced. If that's the reaction I get then great. You'd be suprised that up here in Scotland, with the highest amount of smokers per capita that you barely see smokers in pub gardens? Plenty standing outside on the pavements in the town centres tho!

Well to me it's a little bit more than 'rights', and I would say use common sense. First, not everyone likes the smell (although as a non-cigarette smoker whenever occassional iffy comments come from one of those in pub smoking areas I make sure they know my own views on their own lightweight habit!), so if possible I will look for areas away from kids and potentially down wind. To me that's just being polite - however I always notice as a vegetarian that other people are always more than happy to make me feel sick with their dead offal burgers so...

I'm considerate of others when I smoke, but most people comment on how nice it smells. I think that if you are in a pub garden then you have every right to light up a fat one, unless you are packed in cheek to cheek. (_!_)(_!_)

You sit in the pub garden and damn well smoke your cigar. It's only a matter of time before the suits try to put a stop to that.
            Don't get me started!

As long as you're considerate I don't think it's a problem. Remember you're outside, but not everyone likes the smell. If you smoked fags all over somebody outside they probably wouldn't like that either.
People will notice though as it's not the norm, so be prepared for attention.

I'm a low profile sort of chap so we'll see how the first one goes!

Got a humi-pouch with 4 sticks ready for my fortnight off....

                  1 x H. Upmann Magnum 46
                  1 x Diplomaticos No. 1
                  1 x Montecristo Open Regata

1 x Cohiba Esplendidos (couldn't resist buying another)

Good blog by the way....you'll have another follower once i get my Desire working properly.

I'm with Cap here--I tend to do one of two things on this score. I either go to a place that I know is welcoming, or I scan the scene to see if others are already puffing away such that it seems fine. I've been on both sides of the smoke screen, as it were, and it strikes me that there is no need to be offensive. I suppose one could look at it like talking politics--there are better and worse times and places to do so, but when you force it, things tend to get rather pained.

As for being a vegetarian, that's a whole different can of soon to be dead worms:

                      Thank you.
I've got a Desire too. You may find something of interest over at the XDA forums if you're inclined to play with things.

I'm hanging out for Froyo in Q3....which begins in 2 days time! Most probably be the same situation as my old Hero tho...sitting gathering dust waiting for 2.1

I keep up to date with xda and the others tho and the Hero could be going down this 'root' very very soon.

I've been rooted for some time (currently running MCR 3.1). Pretty scary the first time I did it .
