I eagerly opened my 5 pack of Monty 5's and saw movement NOOOOO!

The little buggers were running over my schmokes. Bugger.
All was well, they were tiny and white, and had a date with my Westinghouse freezer. They froze, went to beetle heaven and I gave their tiny white bodies a funeral - down my sink.

* freezer for 48 hours
* Fridge for 24 hours
* sitting on benchtop with zip lock bag open for 12 hours
* in the humi for 24 hours
* In my mouth for breakfast.

If they are white they are mites. they will only eat the glue off your bands. no need to worry about them. If you have true beetles your smokes will have pinholes in them and its best to just throw them in the yard as the damage is done.

I have bought from them a few times, and so have several friends. We had a few customer service type emails back and forward and I was happy with their responses. We have never had any problems in the past.

Yes, ultimately, I will buy from them again. I will give the Monty 5's some time to cycle through though.

Bloody Beetles...

As said above if they were small and White they were mites and completely harmless, though still a nuisance. A clean out of humidor, brushing off gars and thorough washing off the humidifier (where they tend to hang the most) normally gets rid of em

Lasiodermia serricorne (tobacco beetle) DON'T run over cigars? Actually you barely see them?

As said above, your white tiny things were harmless mites?

Yeah I've had the white mites before. I nearly shit my pants when I first saw things crawling over my sticks but after seeing Boss Hog's thread I calmed down a bit!

The "too warm" thread got me thinking about true baccy beetles & just how much of a potential problem are they these days now that most (all?) reputable cigar manufacturers supposedly fumigate or freeze their stocks - even in Cuba.

Has anyone had a beetle infestation, or seen a beetle or evidence thereof in their cigars?

In all my near 10 years cigar 'career' I've only had one cigar with beetle problem - an Esplendido (IIRC) bought in Tenerife about 7 years ago. Luckily that was before I got my cabinet & as all my other humis were full, all my holiday purchasers went into my CGars perspex humi jar where I was able to see the exit hole the beetle had made, along with a minute trail of cigar dust down the side of the jar leading to the cedar plate at the bottom, under which I found the beetle, dead.

Yes they are a worry. Cleaning and freezing will work but it's very difficult to clean all and freeze all several humi's worth of stocks simultaneously if you (like me) don't have a large cabinet freezer.

To get rid of them permanantly they have to be killed off in the humi's and tuppadores ? in one hit.

This is again a bit radical. White wood mites also live in reptile tanks. They live on the stuff used to line them, but also cause skin problems for the snakes etc. Hypoaspis mites are introduced into the tanks. These are highly predatory and will go through wood mights in no time. When there are no more wood lice to eat they die within a few days. As I said, radical but a solution.

Poor fella couldn't handle the Cohiba strength! Should have started off el rey or upmann, those silly beetles they never learn!

I found some of these little sods on Montes I bought in Cyprus recently- a 3 pack of no4s and a 3 pack of Edmundos both had them.

As already stated, these are not harmful and won't damage your cigars. However this could be sign that the cigars were not stored in a proper humi for a period whilst out of the factory, hence allowing them to thrive at higher temparatures.

I have come to this conclusion as all of the Montes (that I had not smoked) sprang mould a week or 2 later, despite being stored well at home. I bought many cigars from the same shop and only the montes had the mites and consequently the mold.
