  • I gots a question

Pulled a lurvely CAO Gold robusto out of the humi this evening and went to snip the tip only to notice that it looked like someone had satten upon it; end was sadly, badly, seriously mashed. Cut it anyway. Dismal failure. Shredding tobacco left and right and the wrapper started to unfurl.

    Hmmm....

Knew that if I cut it again, it would only make the situation worse and didn't want to shorten this already short fellow even more.

    Hmmm...

So as I'm looking at this 'gar it occurs to me that the other end looks perfectly fine. Why not just...

And that's what I did: Lit the shredded tip and smoked the stogie ass backward.

Tasted just fine and smoked like a dream all the way to the end.

And why shouldn't it? It's the same tobacco end-to-end. What difference should it make which way we smoke it?

Which brings up the question of why do we smoke 'em the way we do instead of making use of an already perfectly-cut end?

    Opinions?

You smoked it backwards? What are you? Some kind of anarchist? Go smoke some Drew Estates since you clearly have no respect for cigars.

      Well salvaged there Georgie

re smoking that way 'round all the time, there'd come a day when a cigar would probably unravel on ya due to that end being cut and not finished the same as the regular exhaust

You're right though re the tobaccy being the same all through. Well, at least with the long fillers, I'm unsure about short fillers though.

Only time I tried it (by mistake) found wrapper kept unrolling off it coz its rolled to be smoked one way.

In addition to the unravelling thing.....

At one of the hunters and frankau evenings Simon Chase explained (and I had never known this, proving my utter ignorance) that the leaves in Cuban cigars (and I assume NCs too) run from the tip end of the leaf at the foot of the cigar to the base of the leaf at the cap. They do this because the flavour of the leaf intensifies towards the base of the leaf, thus increasing the flavour as the cigar progresses. We were smoking a Robaina Don Alejandro so I assume the effect is even greater with a larger cigar and thats why Simon was telling us.

I'll be honest CJ till a couple of weeks ago I'd never realised this... smoking good cigars for 15 years and never thought about it.... embarrassing really.

Next thing they'll be telling me there's a specific way of putting together a car to ensure it works!

If only they'd done that when there was still a UK car industry.
