  • Fake or just a bad D4?

Anyone ever heard of a fake D4 before?

I lit one up earlier and right from the start it was falling to bits. Then just below the band it felt like there was a hollow spot, it also felt too spongey.
So much so that I could almost squeeze it flat and it would spring back again?? The ash was dark and flakey and peeled outwards not a tight light grey ash.

I didn't think much to the taste either, in the end after the first third I got rid of it and went for an trusted Rocky.
I've got a 3 left in the humi, these were all about 6 months old and had sourced them as singles from a supplier who I wont mention but are all familiar with.
Of the 3 I've got left 2 seem a bit suspect and seem the same overly spongey hollow feel to them and compared to the 3rd the wrapper is a lot lighter in colour.
I dont ever remember having a decent one of these but have kept buying the odd one or two to give them a 2nd, 3rd chance.
Have I been unlucky again or picked up a fake?

Never had a spongy one, had a couple that were a tad tight , other than that they're great.Had one today that was an 09 and it was bloody marvelous.
I started out with nothing and i've still got most of it left - Seasick Steve

Love the D4's! I never had a bad one or a fake one.
I seen fakes D4's in Mexico.

Boss, sounds like you just don't like them...it's just not your taste profile.
Forget about them and move on to something else.

Fake or just a bad D4?

Sounds to me like you may have stored them at too high a humidity
Smoke em if you've got em

Probably bad QC issue Mark. Very unlucky and what a shit, especially when you're looking forward to a smoke. I've had a couple of JL2s with 'hollow' spots. Poorly filled/rolled methinks.

I note you've grabbed a few singles over a period of time Mark. I was thinking, maybe some vendors, erm select shall we say, particular cigars for single sales

I wouldn't give give up on them Mark. Perhaps a 10ct box, at a later date, is in order to restore some faith in the D4?

I store them at 64-65%, hygro recently tested and is spot on. These werent spongey through humidity they were like that as there was a huge gap under the wrapper and binder. I've pulled it apart now and there is section cut out of the leaves like a big bite mark.

Big J - I dont think its the brand, the SP2 and P5 are one of my all time faves.

Just top it up with a bit of sawdust if theres any gaps and send it on to someone else!!
Sit back & light up a bahia maduro instead!!

you should contact the retailer. see what they say. take a picture of the offending article and email it to them. I'm sure you would get a good response.

This does sound an uncommon problem and a quality retailer will want to know about any problems.

If they don't then there are plenty of others who would be happy to take your hard earned cash from you.
