  • Help me but I think I can't smoke cigars...

    Hi guys,

with great anticipation I tried a Bolivar see my other thread and was disappointed.

The draw was good and I had an even burn. However the only taste I had was from the wrapper! No enjoyable taste as the ERdM in fact it was sort of dull.

What went wrong there? I might simply not be the cigar smoker I would like to be.

    Can someone tell me why?

The cigar was a dodgy one, you dont like this particular cigar, you've got a cold, many other reasons too?

      Wierd, some tips..

      1) Try not to eat or drink anything with overwhelming tastes which can remain in your mouth, this may affect the taste of the cigar and in your case not allow you to taste much of it.

      2) Try retro-haling with the cigar (breathing the smoke through your nose) this is supposed to really improve the strength of it's tastes.

      3) Purge the cigar, sometimes burnt tobacco can be stuck at the foot of the cigar from when you lit it, blow through the cigar slightly to purge the cigar and allow the purer taste to come through.

      4) Finally, the cigar may have been a bad draw, try another from a different box when you can.

Mate, that might simply be the answer!
Everyone has different tastes, likes, dislikes etc.
Cigars for many are an acquired taste. Some people stick to a mild cigar, some progress through the different ranges and eventually settle on a few favourites, others just enjoy trying different types, brands etc. BUT, some people just don't get any particular enjoyment and that may be your category.
As I see it you have 2 choices, first I would suggest you stick at it for a few and see if you begin to detect any of the different flavours and begin to enjoy the experience. Second, if this doesn't work you can either keep taking the occassional cigar or give up. To be frank, a good cigar needs to be kept properly and is too expensive a hobby to waste your hard earned cash on if you don't get the enjoyment out of it.
Regarding the cigars you have smoked, I have to say that the boli RC is a big favourite of mine, I love the flavours. So much so that its usually a burnt finger job. (poor etiquette, I know.)
All the best mate, hope you decide to give it some time to see, but as I say, if its not for you don't throw your cash at it.

I couldn't find your "other thread" but my first question would be : are you sure it was a Bolivar?
Unless you are sure of the pedigree, it's always possible you were smoking a Dominican or one of those fine Panama products beloved of the online shippers.

Bolivars are considered my most fans as quite full-bodied if not actually strong and always have lots of flavour. If you liked an ERdM, you should quite enjoy a Bolivar. Try a Partagas as well.

Well, Cris. I've had two different Bolivars and both were a bit too strong for me. Either you're taste buds were shot at the time or you had a dodgy cigar.
Worst scenario is, like Lionhound says, you don't like cigars. Bit of a bugger but look on the bright side-you can spend your brass on another hobby!

Hi Cris, they dont always taste as we expect, often depending on your pallete, i know the taste of good wine and whisky i know what any good food tastes like i know the taste of chocolate, nuts, i recognise the smell of leather and wood, i dont always get these tastes as others describe, i sometimes wonder what planet they are from or if there mouth normally tastes like an Aborigines armpit, but i do know what cigar i like and when. I prefer the taste of Cubans but like the construction of the NC's. For me half the enjoyment is the taste and half is the time, pleasure and relaxation of smoking a fine Habanos. My opinion is based on reviews ive read elsewhere.
How long have you been smoking Cris ?

Dunno! If you didn't like 'em you wouldn't put one in your mouth.

I've smoked cigars I didn't much like. But once experienced, I just don't smoke those ones again. If HdM's are what you like, stay with them and try one single at the time from the other brands untill you find something else you really like.

Also, it might just have been that the Boli RC was a step to far for you, and the smaller lighter Bonitas might have been the better introduction at your stage of cigar smoking.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Hey guys thanks for your comments. I was drinking Remy Martin and a bit of strong coffee alongside it. I definitely got the nice taste of the ERdM and think I might have got a bit of a dodgy one.

Draw was ok and I'm not ill etc. Will try the Cohiba today and see if I can get any taste out of it. It actually might have been the coffee (with splash of milk?) that could have ruined that. Not giving up. If I hadn't taste the ERdM would have been a 'disappointment' as well. I'm investigating. Got my humi with me and will smoke one after work near the peer today

I've had days, even a week or two when cigars just don't do it for me.

Fortunately the craving always comes back and I find one to put me back on firm footing.

Good shout Tippex. I read, wrongly, that he hadn't enjoyed the ERDM either.
Remember you're still a noob, enjoy the one you like and, as Tippy says gradually work your way through some singles to find what else you like. The Boli is a great, intense cigar but, again as Tippex says maybe a step too far at the moment.
However I do still say that in the end some people just don't take to it, its about enjoyment. If you don't enjoy a cigar try another and another, but if you ain't gettin' the enjoyment just move on to something else. We're all different, I would hate being made to listen to Cliff Richard albums, so I don't.
Stick with it if you can, even if its just for the benefit of boring bastards like me being able to do the Agony Uncle bit!!
Is it affecting your sex life?

Aye I think it might have been that I'm stil a newbee. Will give another cigar a go today. Should be alright and I really think I like cigars not a wishful thinking.

Will update you if I can get something out of the other ones. Was just a bit shocked when I couldn't get any taste at all yesterday.

No my sexlife is alright. Ask me ex

Kristeen, old noob, some most excellent suggestions given here; however, all wrong.

The simple truth of the matter is that if a cigar doesn't taste good to you, you are just not cut out to be a stogie smoker.

Thencefore, out of the kindness of my heart, I will graciously offer to take all those stinky, foul-tasting see-gars off your hands, thus absolving you of the need to find another suitable method of disposal. Of course, the expense of shipping them to me will be at your expense since my expense account is not sufficiently expansive to expend the expense myselves.

No need to thank me. I do this out of true love for my fellow man and wouldn't even dream of suggesting that you include a tasteful and expensive gift (in a pinch, it needn't be tasteful) along with the shipment.
