  • What to do...Cigar Etiquette

    Gents,

What is the etiquette when someone gives you an un-opened box of cigars as a gift? Case in point...I have received boxes of cigars as gifts over the years and each time they want me to open the box immediatly and bust out several to smoke. I would rather keep the box sealed for storage, and share some of the other fine cigars I always carry.

My thought is that if it were a bottle of wine, no one expects you to open it immediatly, why then are a sealed box of cigars any different?

    Thoughts?

I'm sure one of TJ's split personalities would say "If they bought them for you and they want to smoke them then they are not friends..."

If they bought them, let them join you in a cigar. They aren't ruined once the box is opened.

I would explain politely that they need to be aged before smoking and that maybe after they have aged you will open it. Then offer them one that you carry with you for smoking..

Then when you get home 'send the box to me' haha no one has ever given me full boxes before.. wheres your friend? does he need another? im available for generous friends

Tough one. There are clearly a few ways of looking at it.

What would I do? I'd crack it open and share them around. Same with wine.

Each to their own, though and a gift is by definition, a gift.

Explain that it would be a 'waste' to not rest such a fine gift.

Well, not quite, senor Larryspud, but nice try.

I think it depends on the nature of the gift (ritual or unexpected) and the level of puro appreciation of the giver ( Knewbee or aficionado).

The would probably not know any better and expect a sample; in which case, I would open the box and spark a few up.

The , on the other hand, should know better than to expect a stick from a gift box and likely would bring along a few sticks to enjoy now.

                I'd share.

I agree with that sentiment entirely, to hell with etiquette if we risk offending the friend giving a gift.

You might ask a loaded question and guage their reaction...

"Should we crack the box open now and try some, I know we should probably let them rest, what do you think?" then offer some of yours out of your humi instead as an alternative, just a suggestion for what it's worth.

                          Great replies all!

Share it is! This is what I have done in the past, however, I think it is the time between getting a box and comments of "crack open the box and let's smoke", about 15 seconds that gets to me. Then hands dig in and before ya know it 10+ cigars are gone and being smoked....Even that in itself is OK, but then I find 1/2 to 3/4 smoked cigars sitting in the ash tray, because they were not cigar smokers to begin with that.....well, ya know. They are good mates though so I will suck it up.

                          Cigar anyone?? lol

I have been there before I have had thrown partys and there is always some buzzed guys or drunk woman that want a cigar. That is why I will always have a humidor of some new cigars in it for them

                              good advice here!

I agree! If a mate is generous enough to buy you a box of cigars, then why not share, if they ask.

I have never been in this situation though! My mates don't buy me shit. They just mooch free cigars off of me!
