I was reading today that Che Guevara used to often put his cigar butts into a pipe and smoke them later. Have any of you tried this? It got me wondering whether cigar tobacco used in pipes would taste very similar to an actual cigar..

Using cigar tobacco in a pipe

Well, smoking a cigar butt into a pipe and smoking some chopped cigar tobacco (from a totally plugged cigar, for instance), are completely different experiences.
To smoke the butt, you need a pipe that
1/ fits precisely the ring gauge of the cigar, and
2/ has a good, open draw, otherwise you won't get any smoke?
Chopped cuban tobacco, even from premium habanos, is often harsh when smoked "all on its own", but it can enhance a virginia blend or an english blend w/ latakia?

But re-cycling cigar tobacco isn't new or unusual. From the earliest days of cigar manufacture in Spain, cigars were a status symbol, the preserve of the wealthy and consumed only by the idle rich. A common practice by Spanish beggars was to rescue discarded cigar butts and re-roll them into cigarillos, ... the first prototype cigarettes. If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

You have just given me an idea, when I cut my cigar I will pit the off cut into a small box and store it in my humidor until I have enough to fill one of my small pipes.
I can't say I like the idea of smoking the ends of "previously enjoyed" cigars...all together now "I smoke old stogies I have found"Nic

I used to sell damaged cigars to a guy that would chop them up, mix them with some Gold Block and smoke them in his pipe. He swore by it.UK Cigar Smokers Club http://www.cigars.co.uk

Glad to be on board Skip'
It is indeed the very same Jimmy. How are you Nic? We still need to have that smoke, no?
I was feeling a little monitor shy so just wanted to ease myself in and join a few discussions...
I think I've made myself sound unreasonably mysterious now.UK Cigar Smokers Club http://www.cigars.co.uk

Hi Jimmy - I'm a bit slow on the uptake, but I sent you an email the other day and you confirmed you are who I thought.
Anyhow, a belated welcome on board - I might be able to come along to Manc Sq on Monday for a quickie before the official event starts so might meet if you're there early.

I do this quite a lot, i normally snip off the end after ive fnished my smoke, cut off the burnt and a little more.. i use my hands to rub the leaves together until its brittle then store it in an ice cream tub for a while.. i also use a DrPlumb pipe which has room for a 9mm filter. That filtrs out any unsavoury bitterness you woudget with a pipe.. to me it provides the savours that way as a cigar.
I think o, you need a decent pipe, asr going out all the time, you need to tamper it regular and it will stay alight.
