  • Where to by butane gas?

I know it's best to use odorless flames for lighting a cigar. Now I've looked around for butane gas and I've only found the ronson lighter refiller stuff in the yellow tin. Is this the right stuff, cause I cant find anything else about, looks like Ill have to look online.

Doesnt mention nothing on the tin?

    Ronson is butane.

Almost all gas marketed as lighter fuel is going to be butane, some stuff could possibly be mixed with propane, but I haven't seen any over here that is, not marketed as lighter gas anyway, that's generally just done with proper canisters and tanks if it's done at all, not lighter gas type canisters.

Yeah Ronson is the stuff. If you can get it though, the Near-Zero Impurity stuff will be better for your lighter. I just get mine from the cigar shop, though I've seen it available in normal newsagents.

        Hi Mr B

What sort of lighter are you using?
I only ask because what you describe sounds more like lighter fluid/fuel, the sort used by 'wick' lighters (hard to be sure without a picture).

If you're looking for an 'odourless' product 'Butane' is your friend.
I'm not sure how easy it is to buy online (posting it could be an issue?), luckily (like Dave) most of my local tobacconists have it in stock, usually behind the counter, just have to ask.

If it's in a tin then it's lighter fluid as you say, but I assume he meant a gas canister, which will be butane gas.

I've never seen that Newport stuff so did a little investigating. Seems ebay came up trumps Quite good prices too, will be getting some of that or the Colibri asap. One of the burners on my torch lighter is a bit temperamental so maybe this'll help.

Make sure you bleed any remaining gas out before you refill. This may help.

Try 'purging' the lighter before filling by depressing the filling valve with a matchstick until all the gas is out. Blowing the offending burner with some compressed air might remove any 'gunk' that might be in there too. I have a few lighters that act up (usually at the worst times ) and that always seems to work for me.

Sorry Dave, you type faster then I do!

Whatever you do, don't use a ballpoint pen to press the valve in. The escaping gas pushes all the ink out the back!

                    Are we speaking from experience??

RE the link: I've never head of shaking the can to warm it up before filling. I would imagine that if you used a colder gas and lighter you would have more gas in it thus more use before fill ups. I have been told to put a lighter in the freezer before filling to get it colder so more gas would fit inside. Boyle's Law??

ST dupont advise a cold lighter and warm the gas between your hands, this ensures maximum transfer. I put my lighters in the freezer for 10 mins before filling.

                        Indeed I am!

IMHO, it doesn't matter whether you shake or not, as it is liquid butane you are transferring, not gaseous. The cold lighter makes sense as you want it to stay liquid rather than boiling on contact with lighter walls.

Interesting M66. I'll try popping the Xtend in the freezer prior to next refill.

It can go next to the butter my wife put in there yesterdayas I found when making toast. Last week she popped some all purpose cleaner in the fridge, next to the milk 'Baby brain' apparently.

Just don't leave it in there too long or it may burn/stick to your hand. The other thing to consider with jet lighters is that you should leave them for 10 mins after filling to 'warm up' before trying to use them.
