Can over humidifying cigars lead to them being plugged and can you you tell if it's going to be plugged before you smoke it?
Is it just a case of using the draw poker on it.

I 've got a cigar that I want to send someone but it feels a bit tight with not much squeeze in it. I dont want to send it in case it is and I end up looking crap (despite it being free).
I maybe wrong and there may be nothing wrong with it.

It depends on how over humidified it is. You can certainly make a cigar soggy and thus ruin it. But a very firm cigar does not mean it's bad. Actually it usually means the opposite!

I don't think there is a way to tell if they are plugged prior to cutting and drawing on them. I have many tight rolled sticks that draw just fine once cut or punched. I have had a few that needed a little poking with a sharp stick too but that's why I keep a small stiff wire around so I can open up the draw a bit should it be needed.
Trying is the first step toward failure.

Boss, normally i think it is down to failure in the actual construction process during rolling which leads to plugging, i don`t think humidification has an effect on the cigars at all.
The humidity in my own humidor is usually a little higher due to my cigars still being in the boxes and I have never experienced any real problems.

What I have found is that certain brands seem more prone to poor construction and plugging (think Punch). You can sometimes feel an area of the cigar which may be plugged by squeezing it between your fingers prior to smoking, but it is not an exact science.

Yeah, with you there Craig. Perhaps over humidification would exacerbate the issue (with slight swelling, oooh errr) but bunched up leaf material would be the culprit. The tight lumps (oh, I'm off again) can be indicative like you say and sometimes working them between your fingertips can loosen things up a bit.

Boss, if this is a stick you're looking to send, just mention things to the recipient. A poke up the jacksie will, in most cases, sort things out

Craig, that Casa Magna I sent you, came with some, err, instructions didn't it?

It did indeed CJ, but as I stated, I never had any probs with the Casa Magna at all, even though subsequently having read various references to them being of poor construction etc.

Maybe I was just lucky with the one you sent through.Real nice cigar IMO.

            To Catch A Dawg!

With all due respect, over humidified puros and stogies may create more drag on the draw, which may be interpreted as plugged. But I must agree with the previous gentlemen....a plugged cigar is usually the result of poor construction rather than over humidification.

If it were me, I'd send the stogie anyway.

..or you could test smoke it first before you send it.

Would someone please help my find my stupid looking dawg smiley?

Is this a cigar person? If they are, suggest a test draw first. If not, just give it a good poke before you send it? Or cut it and test draw it yourself?
