Sorting Sideburn without assistance

Sideburn has always made me think, is there a proper way I should be holding / smoking a cigar.

Normally I hold a cigar vertically so the heat can rise through the cigar, but if Im resting the cigar on an ashtray, I normally rotate it every so often, but it makes me wonder, does airflow affect a cigar resting horizontally?



Say I have similar uneven burn like the picture above, if I wanted the cigar to sort itself out naturally, how would I rest the cigar on the ashtray? Should it be like the top image, or the bottom. I would imagine it to be the top as there would be airflow/heat going upto the unevenly burnt part.

If I get uneven burn I normally just rotate the uneven part above a flame to sort it out. But im interested in how holding (or resting) would affect how the cigar would burn.

I was told that if the burn was uneven you should hold the longer side down (which would appear to be the opposite way to the way that would appear correct).

Unless of course you have been standing in a wind tunnel?

As Nic has pointed out the second picture is correct for helping to even out the canoing of the cigar. Apparently the science behind this is that although heat rises the cigar burns a little quicker at the bottom as the smoke leaving the cigar and heading up cuts down on the amount of oxygen, the oxygen is drawn in at the bottom, much like an open fire. i'm sure one of the proper clever fellas on here will have a better explanation.... the laws of physics shouldn't change though.

Thats what I do...OR just use your lighter to make things all ok again..

Tried it with my RC today, didn't really make a blind bit of difference lol. Just used my ol lighter to adjust things

When in the 60s &70s we did that with _ _ _ _ ,well U know so as not to waste it and straighten it out but that was a bit skinner!

I store my Maduro Cigars Higher im my humidor Cause the humity I feel is heaver then air. Also My singles I rotate every now and again ! Also try to dry box Your Maduro cigars for a day or so before your ready to smoke them. Some ODD reason they burn and taste better. This is something I have discussed with others and they feel the same .

But im interested in how holding (or resting) would affect how the cigar would burn?
I've really never have given that any thought! I can not understand how the way you hold it and in what position could effefct its burn. And as far as resting it I feel the same way.

I always turn the slower burning side down. It works every time and I don't have to torch the cigar again.

Despite having read countless articles and practiced different methods of lighting the "ol stogie" just recently I have been struggling with uneven burning. I wondered if there might be away of attacking this problem? I found this link that has three ways of helping.

I agree with the above: longer/slower burning side down.
You might need to leave it longer than normal between each puff until it sorts itself out, as I finding sucking on it makes it worse.

What type of unit and humidifier do you have?

If it is a desk top humidor with a static (foam or gell) humidifier, I have found that the humidity tends to concentrate around the hygrometer. The further away from the humidifier, the dryer.

For larger cabinet type humidors with electronically controlled humidifiers, overtime, the humidity tends to concentrate at the bottom, which is why it's a good idea to circulate the air inside your humidor from time to time. TJ's massive humidor has circulating fans that run for a few minutes every 1/2 hour. This helps to prevent a build up of humidity at the bottom of his humidor.

This can easily be demonstrated by placing a hygrometer (preferably digital) at the bottom and one at the top.

Coolerdor with beads at the bottom. I did test with a hygro top and bottom.

[EDIT] It has improved with an Oust fan, but it just happens slower. I think it's too full really (reduced airflow) so I'm transplanting the whole lot to a larger box in the next few days.
