Well, I'll tell ya,' boy.
There was a period during 1999 to 2002 when CCs were released well before they were ready to smoke, supposedly to take advantage of the so-called cigar boom that was happening in America at the time ( That's strange...I thought CCs were banned in the US). The tobacco was rushed to market and tasted like it.
During 2002, Cuba began to improve its quality controls and went back to producing fine puros. But having said that, most CC produced today are much better after resting for a year or two. So while some are very nice right out of the box, others need some more time, like fine wine, as senor stephan put it.
N/Cs, on the other hand, are always ready to go right out of the box and need no additional time after purchase. No respectable N/C retailer would sell stogies that weren't ready to smoke.
At least that what I've read in various articles over the years and from personal experience, this seems about right.

Yes, I sort of hear what you're saying .... nice to see another Liverpool supporter by the way .... but, even where there is a general consensus that a cigar needs age that's just hunch. OK, based on past knowledge and experience, but no guarantee.
My gripe is that I'm paying a retailer today for something he's telling me I really ought to be not smoking untill sometime after the cows come home .... a bit like Raffa telling Fergie "20 mil for Fernando up-front now, and with a bit of time for rest and operations he ought to be back to all of the player he might have been last season". Bit of a gamble really. If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Unfortunately...
Your suggestion would seem quite reasonable, tip, old hat, if it weren't for just one teensy little problem: Last time I checked, cigar folks are actually trying to make a profit.
Can't make money on a stogie that's sitting in your aging shed. Gotta get it out to the consumer. Believe someone down the thread mentioned that you can actually smoke just about any stogie straight out of the box. Generally true. However, with very very few exceptions, I've found that the longer you can bear to simmer your stick (hmmm... that sounds vaguely obscene) in the ol' humi, the better it becomes.
(migh too sense)

Hello Boys : This does hold true for NC cigars But !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some seem to get better with age added to them . I've been ageing NC to see what the differance make and some loose their taste and strenth through ageing. Its a shame that some put boxes away to find the"ve runed a great cigar. So I would have to say!
Put 1 or 2 away if U want to try to age them. Preflibly Full strenth will age fine but after 2 + years or so they mite become flat . 1 Cigar Id say never and I meen never age Is the VSG Ashton U will be distroying a 12 dollar plus cigar!
Never Age a mild cigar Longer then 6 months the results will kill them!

The Answer, My Friend, Is Blowin' In the Soil!

It's all about the soil, mate.
Apparently, certain trace elements (e.g., lithium) found in Cuban soil that apparently,do not exist in other regions that produce stogies. Read Tom Zarzecki's article , "The Cuban Mystique" (Cigar Magazine, Spring 2005. He discusses a possible reason why so many people who enjoy fine Habano puros won't except anything less.
Me being one of 'em!
I'll provide a link to his article, if I can find it.

Hi Rokkitsci an Gss1956,
Haha .... I think Rok means the CC branditos want me to age their cigars for them in my humidor at my expense ..... and then, if the gars still ain't right or need suckin' on like a whore-in-a-hurry to get anything outta 'em ..... it's all my fault for not givin' 'em enough time to compost properly!
Gss's right ...... the NC's show a bit 'o repect for their punters ...... an' not just 'cos they carry guns.
A smoke should be ready to smoke when yer hand hits yer pocket I reckon! If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

I think part of the pleasure of smoking/owning cigars is the ageing process. I love to collect and store various cigars for the future, i look forward to the day a couple of years down the line when i open a box and remember buying it etc

Yeah! Well, I thought the same thing when I started smoking fine Habanos a billion years ago, chico. But that's the way it works, and if you do your homework, you can find Habanos with a year or more on 'em.
But referring to CC producers as "banditio" is, well...a bit much, don't you think, muchacho?
Besides, if you don't want to put in the time to enjoy the finest puros in the world, then don't buy 'em!
At least that's what me pappy, Pappy Coro sez. But he also sez "don't go for a whore in a hurry when you still have your hands!"
He sez a lot of shit like that!
BJ, BJCoro
Hey Boy! Fuck you and the Juggler Boy you rode in on!
