  • I'm buying cheap from now on....

After a relatively long stint of...CRAP smoking experiences, i've decided that the majority of my humidor real estate will be filled with non-cubans. I've just had a lovely Cuban Crafters torpedo (cameroon wrapper I believe, had a blue band). I picked this out tonight to get it out the way, the band looked cheap so I thought it would smoke crap, ridiculous close mindedness I know, but we all think that.

And boy how I was wrong, what a marvellous cigar, brilliant white ash all the way down, brilliant draw and considering I cut my torpedos really high up on the cap to maximize draw, this is was great. If I could fault the cigar I occassionally had to keep the burn even as it would sometimes go un-even, but the good experience far outweighed the cons. Teach me to think like that again.

This is not the first time, Rokkit let me in on a little cigar secret, namely Georges Reserve. Now this is a cheap stick, but they are goddamn excellent. Infact my top drawer is full of these now, I have a regular friend who comes round to smoke them too as he loves them.

Not being funny, but I'd rather have a box of those Cuban Crafter things and some Georges Torps than to splash out on a box of CC's.

I've gained this attitude because my last few experiences with cigars in general have been piss poor, I'll show you via a 'recent experience rating' paragraph:

    Piss Poor Experiences:
Partagas Serie D No4 (plugged shit, 2 of 2, will not buy these for a LONG time)
H-Upmann NC Corona (First cigar I've ever chucked away, plugged sack of shit)
Cohiba NC Churchill (God, destroyed wrapper, plugged to death, managed to smoke it only because I wanted a smoke that night)

    Average Experiences:
Bolivar RC (Love em, I have a box! But the last one was really flat and ...musky)

Bolivar Tubo No.2 (Dull to smoke, smaller gauge cigars get the ass with me and sometimes smoke strangely)

Jose L Piedra Brevas - Number 22 from my first box of cigars ever, Not bad, infact it was very well! Nice flavors, behaved well. But wasn't amazing, Brevas have been better from my experiences

A dark Maduro Torpedo - Got this from G-man's Order. Dunno what it was, It looked nice to smoke, but a bit of a work horse smoke, had to keep checking on it . Un-explainable poor draw even though it was lit properly, it was loosely packed aswell, why draw funny for?!

    GOOD Experiences:
Sol Cubano Artisan - Great LOOKING stick, smoked fantasticly throughout!

Georges Reserve Torpedo/Toro - Probably the most consistent stick I've plowed through, Good draw, nice and light, what I want from a smoke.

Cuban Crafters Torp - Super smoke!

CI Legend Series Red Label - These are also really consistent, the dark maduro wrapper and the white ash give this cigar a great look, but also give off lovely chocolate and mixed tones, a great go-to cigar when I want something a bit heavier

Perdomo Golf Edition (or something) - It had a green band and mentioned golf. This was beautiful. I smoked this on a sunny sunday morning, it was emitting blue neon and white smoke from both ends and it was being enhanced by the morning sun, looked great. Smoked a treat, a surprise for an early riser.

Ashton Cabinet Torpedo - This was another brilliant one, gleaming white solid ash, a real easy goer, no effort to smoke, some real funky flavors in there.

unnamed NC - I had a cigar the other night and it blew me away, the complexity of it, I was not expecting! I forget the name, probably because it was so damn good.

As you can see most of the good recent ones have been cheapy NC's. They've performed well and above the call of smoking duty for being cheap. When a cuban smokes bad, I get in a bad mood, one, because I look foward to a cigar and when it goes wrong, it affects me personally, and two, they're more expensive, you're essentially watching money burn. With a cheaper NC, I don't mind accepting that one might be crap, and I can discard it because it's cheaper. I know that may be subjective to people with different incomes, but I don't get annoyed when an NC is crap, I just laugh and avoid them. (Cohiba)

More bang for your buck? Or are Non Cubans's acting like foster guardians to a small child (me) who has been beaten and bruised a few times by his parents (cubans) at the moment?

If I have to buy cheap cigars just to get an easy going smoking experience which is consistent like Georges, then so be it.

    What do you think?

I wonder why your experience has been so bad with the Cubans. What's your humidity at, and is your hygrometer calibrated? I ask after your comment on the latest Boli RC...

A consistent 60-65. Any higher I'm not comfortable with. When I top up my humidifiers it's normally 70ish for a week or two. Haven't topped it up for a month or so and it's hovering around 62. good enough for me!

I have to agree on Rokkit being a source of surprisingly good smoking tips. Probably the best mild smoke I have tested in the last 2 months was an Arte Cubano, kindly provided by our man at NASA, also from Cuban Crafters; a 2 $ stick but not in taste... so pleasant.

I still have the Gorge's Reserve Topedo and Toro plus the Perdomo Golf thingy (I think it might be called Eagle) in my humi, but I guess they'll be up for smoking soon .

Mr. B., where are you buying the CubanCrafters smokes from? Directly from them or elsewhere? Their shipping is quite high

P.S. I absolutely agree on the Perdomo CI Legends Red label - If CI shipped abroad I'd probably buy a box, but also if you haven't tried the Maroon label yet, give it a go. Nice maduro stick.

Mr. B, sorry to hear that you are having bad experiences with cubans. It is pretty common knowledge that NC cigars have generally superior construction to CC. Not all of course. NC have far better quality controls than the CC factories. Fortunately, I have had great experiences with CC, but I do not limit myself to strictly smoking those. It is nice to change it up a bit.

Maybe from some, personally I'd love to learn more about NC, and I since I know little about cubans I have no issue admitting I know as much about NCs . Any word of wisdom from you fellow BOTLs across the pond is more than welcome for me.

Without wanting to hijack Mr. B's discussion, personally I envy the fact that there are so many pleasant, well priced and well constructed NCs available in the US. Not that I mind having access to CCs , but their price rarely can compete with the affordable NC brands as everyday smokes.

Do I overlook the more expensive top shelf NC brands because of this? Probably, but I am trying to remedy to that (looking forward to those RP Decade!)

What a bugger Mr. B, I guess you've been extraordinarily unlucky

The NC market is huge though and you've already found a few to tickle your fancy. You don't seem the type to get anal about whether your cigars are Cuban or not (unless that's how they're getting plugged) so enjoy the journey

Keep us all informed about your NC experiences won't you?

Fair play, you just sound like you have been extraordinarily unlucky. I asked as my last Boli RC was like that, and I discovered that my humidity had dropped and I suspect that's what's causing it.

Glad you're at least enjoying the NCs!

                    touchy subject for this forum!

I have a mixed view in a way on this matter. Most of the cigars I have smoked have been nc. But, on the other hand I have smoked several cc too. Prolly at least a box worth in the last week. (been smoking lots of cigars lately, I wouldnt know why?) But I have about 10 years under my belt smoking cigars. I feel like I have experienced some mighty fine smoking experiences in that short amount of time. Both from nc and cc.

Nc cigars, as my friend jdawg put it are superior in construction and appearance. I feel like even the nc boxes and bands are even better put together. I feel that the smoking quality is far more consistant than a cc. With a nc cigar I can count on the same experience cigar after cigar. And I like that. If I purchase a box of cigars, I purchased them for a reason. Because I want the same experience I had when I bought the single of it. There are plenty of nc that I wouldnt smoke if somebody gave them to me though. I can understand some of the hesitation and mud slinging that they recieve by members of this forum. Even though the market in your area is dominated by Cuban brands. I have had several nc cigars that have blown away ccs. In fact the best cigar I think I have ever smoked was a nc cigar. The padron 45th. And those Cuban crafters, I have bought my fair share of their product and find it to be a great bargain. Try the miami edition if you want their very best. I am sure rokkitsci has tried that line before.

Cuban cigars on the other hand......lots to be said about them and most of it good! There is something about a cc that I adore. I just absolutely love it when I get one that is as jdawg puts it an "in your face smoke". Some very top notch cigars they make in Cuba. I think they have issues with quality control. I think maybe the demand is so great for them that their quality suffers a bit because of that. I have had more bad experiences with inconcistant ccs than with nc cigars. And like I said, I have smoked about 10 years. Mixing it up with nc and cc. Mostly cc. I probably have only smoked about 10 boxes of ccs in my life. That says something I think. I still find that when I get a good one, nothing can top it. I guess except that padron from Nicaragua!

Everybody is going to hate me now!

I've actually got to agree with you slightly kingcohiba. In my admittedly very minimal experience, the construction, burn and draw on the NCs I've smoked has beaten the majority of the Cubans I've smoked so far. I've just not found any that taste as good. Yet.

                        A World Of Choice!

We all likes what we likes, I guess, and that's a good thing. I wish I had you palate for N/Cs so I could save a few pesos.

I have smokes billions and billions of N/Cs and CCs and find CCs to be a superior smoke. But there are many fine N/Cs that I enjoy very much, such as the A. Fuente 858 and Latino Gold - both great values (around 1,000pesos for a box).

Other N/Cs that I put on par with some of my finest Habanos (and cost just as much) are the Davidoff Millennium and 100th Anniversary Limited Edition. Also the A. Fuente God of Fire and the older A. Fuente Anejos.

But my preference is Habano puros, hands down!

BTW, your humidity level seems a wee bit low, IMO.

But what the hell do I know, we don't need humidors in my beloved SoM, MX.

I believe that all above post are entitled to their own personal experiances. When 1 cigar taste great to one B/SOTL it might not have the same flavor and profile to others. I'll be the first to admit that theres something about the taste of a true CC!When U smell it prelight and light it the first taste tells you that its the real deal & totally differant then anything in the cigar world. I think it has to do with the potasum count in the soil.

On the other hand we seem to forget that most of the NC companys were started by master blenders who fled the Casto era and smuggled their seeds with them. We Keep refering to NC cigars as cheap My saying" Price does not dictate quality" I think there is much more compatition within the NC marketplace and this in turn keeps prices much mor reasonable. ( Cheap is such a Cheap discription )I don't have the CC knowlage and experiance that most on this forum do but am will and egar to study and learn. But in the time ive spent here I've noticed my brothers in the UK and elswhere have been branching out of their comfort zone and enjoying more and more NC cigars. Which is proof that were never to old or set in our ways to learn!
