  • Ever rolled before?

The other night I was watching a show based on a family-owned wedding planner business. This one particular bride wanted to surprise her groom with a cigar rolling station at the reception.

Cool idea. The planners wanted two rollers but they could only get one real cigar roller. He showed up in his fedora with all the fixens and a humidor full of cigars for the groom. There was no second roller so one of the employess of the wedding planner company took lessons from the torcedor 2 days before the wedding. I'm sure it takes longer than that to get good at rolling.

But it got me thinking about how much I would enjoy learning how to roll cigars.

Has anyone here done that before?

you know, i was actually looking at old cigar molds or presses the other day thinking this might be cool to try someday. i dont currently have enough land to plant what id call my selection to try to grow and harvest but i actually thought about trying it. i bet they would suck though. i know i could make the tobacco grow because i have a green thumb. my grandfather always had me building gardens when i was a kid! whatta job! but i learned lots from him. he used to do lots of farming in his young years. hes the only person i have ever met who had tomato plants over 8 feet tall!

I wonder if one could buy tobacco for rolling? Of course, to do it just for fun once or twice would warrant the creation of a "cigar rolling kit." Wouldn't that be an awesome gift to pick up at a cigar shop?

You can certainly get decent tobacco seeds and growing it isn't that difficult in theory.....Hmmmm!

You might want to Google a bit. There were "cigar rolling kits" available at one time.

If you attend a February "Festival de Habanos" in Havana they always have a cigar rolling session and you get to keep the apron, chaveta and rolling board as well as the results of your "new skill".

I was surprised that the result of my first rolling experience was a Piramides (a Commander Bob No.2) that ended up exactly the correct 52 ring gauge through no fault of my own. I didn't have the heart to cut it to length but I could easily make it 6 1/8. No presses but lots of pressure to keep up with the "teacher".
          Tons-o-fun!
Now, I have to admit that I made a bit of a mess of finishing the tapered head so one of the circulating "assistants" grabbed another wrapper leaf and in about 2 seconds had trimmed it to shape -a process that had taken me about 5 min of painstaking chaveta weilding.
She "guided my hands" (a memorable experience in itself) and the smoke ended up a bit rough but quite an acceptable (and rare) "double wrapped" cigar.
OK / maybe not good enough to pass Montecristo QC.

Maybe one day I'll smoke it and let you know how it has aged.

If you ever get a chance to try rolling your own- go for it.
Yes, it's really a difficult art to perfect but if a klutz like me can produce a decent piramide on his first try, you can too.

          .

I know rollers have been over our way recently (UK) but don't think anyone got to have a go. It would be great fun ay? Top marks there Cbob, like Larry says get a pic up, it would be good to see the Cbob No.2 Double Wrap

thats a pretty cool kit. the more i think about rolling cigars the more i think i dont have the time to do it! by the looks of the prices of getting started i think i might be better off just buying my cigars.

Cool link Pooh. I might give it a go! (to be honest I thought I might have had a stroke of genius for a moment there, but as usual someone else created it before me...)

Good point. I just want to do it long enough to get one good cigar rolled and then roll 5 just like it for aging. Looks like the kit might come with just enough to do that maybe?

                        1. The wrapper needs to be trimmed to a specific shape.
                        2. The bunch already has a bit of Piramid shape.
                        3. Once finished, there is a piece of "Cap" leaf applied to the head.
                        4. The finished cigar is about 8 in. X 52.
