Chop its head off!

... I think I have just met the Robespierre of cigar smokers.

There is a very distinguished gentleman that lives near me and always smokes his Quintero's at a table outside the local coffee place. Until today I had never seen him cut his smokes, but I just walked by and he just chopped a good half inch off the head of his cigar before lighting it up .

Now as a stoopid newrbie (who cannie spell) maybe I am buying too careful when cutting my smokes, but does anyone chop that much off?

depends on the cigar

usually i try to shave a small opening off the cap with a sharp knife, like peeling an apple, never had any problems with draw even after a few slips.

seems like a bit of a waste of cash to remove more

I punch nearly all of mine now tbh Alberto, and very rarely cut.

I always cut, but never ever that much. It' s a blatent waste and causes the wrapper to unravel.

I always aim to cut just enough for a good draw but not too much that the cap wrappers are completely taken off. I find once they are gone, the unravelling begins in earnest.

Never been that hot on the idea of a punch, but it seems a lot of members here are keen on it so might give it a try one day.

Well I think loads of people bought one as they were on ebay dirt cheap here. Might be worth a look!

Ironically, the only cigar I've ever punched was a Punch Punch. I think I must have done it wrong because the end filled up with tar within a few puffs and tasted like I was smoking a road! I've never gone back and tend to cut in the middle of where the cap rounds off. Well, except for pyramids, which I do take nearly half an inch off.

I was always a cutter until someone gave me a free punch. For years I swore by the punch until old TJ brought the Cuban Crafters cutter to my attention....best cutter ever. Utterly, perfectly planar cut...makes a great job of torps too....

for the moment I have only tried double blade cutters and am relatively happy with them, but the punch is something that tickles my curiosity... as well as the V cutter although these seem to be a lot harder to come by.

What are your expert opinions on the V cutter?

I had a lovely old piece that had Bolivar engraved on it. Solingen made, but despite having a seemingly keen edge, did not cut like you'd expect. I gifted it and forgot to mention its deficiency to a member's shock as it tore the end off his stogie.

I've no experience of contemporary ones Alberto. They don't seem very popular these days judging by what's for sale generally.

IMHO you cannot beat a good double blade cutter

If I cut too deep mostly it unravels. When I smoke a torpedo, I've recently only been cutting off a small tip so the draw is nice. Cant really do that with corona, churchil, toro style shapes
