  • BUGS!

I decided to reorganize my humidor today and found a small caterpillar-like bug rolled up in a ball near some black dust in the bottom of my humi.

Humidity and temp have been perfect for months now so I had not had any reason to worry about beetles. But I don't think this was a beetle. It ate a small portion of the wrapper of one of my CAO cigars but didn't move on to any of the other cigars. I took a few cigars out and cut them open just to be sure and found nothing.

I also took most of my cigars that were near that one and put them in the freezer just in case.

I think I have to buy a new humidor. Probably an upgrade.

Has anyone seen this kind of thing before?

i have larry, found a hole in a cigar one time years ago so decided to disect the cigar. a little worm was inside the filler. might have two of them in there. i believe that these worms turn into the beetles. i very well could be wrong. but thats what a guy told me. from what he said the eggs are rolled into the tobacco, they hatch into a worm and the worm turns into a bug. they should make a horror movie about these things!

that sounds horrible, at least it ends the argument of weather or not to remove the celophane from some cigars

            My thoughts exactly !

I guess it was the lava befor the tranformation! Im hoping that U keep your CC and NC cigars seperate? Bought a batch of stogies years ago to find beetles infestation in two bundles,Yikes! the freeze will do the trick, but in my opinion it alters the flavor slightly,IMHO Good Luck and all will be fine .

I missed the CAO part.....my incident with the worms were with CAO cigars as well. And I agree a CAO would kill about anything!

That'd be a beetle Larry. They're usually found rolled up in a little ball. The freezer is a necessary precaution. Chuck all the rest of the CAO cigars.

They're not difficult to get rid of in a humidor that's checked regularly. I had some in some Partagas Coronas recently, no sign of them since I got id of the offending cigars.

Apparently YES is the answer. The adults WILL chew through cello to go from one cigar to another in search of mates or nursery. The larvae, when the temperature is right for them to hatch, appear to like all sorts of stuff ? furniture, dry foods, spices, christmas decorations ? anything with an organic content and they'll eat it.

So, cello off or on cigars .... I really don't know.
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

                      Off or on,it doesn't matter.
                      The beetles eat through it.

"Our survey say's - Buhh Burr!"

Had 'em twice in the last 10 years, one in a batch of CC's, and one in a cellophane wrapped NC.
Spotted the tell tale dust in the cello during a routine inspection and quarantined said stogie for observation.
The beetle drilled through the cello in less than a few hours. Scary.
Like John Carpenters 'The Thing' (except much smaller).
                        (just to be sure).
                        I incinerated the little blighter

                        Be afraid, be very afraid!
