I've just been issued a laptop to trial my role from home and the best place to do it is in my cabin, @cigarmo has confirmed that cigar smoke won't damage the laptop.

Really, if you can't work at home, you should be at work? Surely that's essential business only? Do you have a copy of anything you can post? My daughter is still working in a non-essential work & perhaps this is their excuse for keeping some in the office.

That's not the legal message underpinning what they're actually saying currently, as per the following;

"As set out in the section on staying at home, you can travel for work purposes, but only where you cannot work from home.
With the exception of the organisations covered above in the section on closing certain businesses and venues, the government has not required any other businesses to close – indeed it is important for business to carry on."

We're seeing a dramatic difference in Scotland to England, 90% of our customers shut in Scotland (so we're just dealing with medical manufacturers food and other critical manufacturers) but in England currently at 25% of customers closed.

I know that feeling, I?ve already had to let 3 casuals go and am trying desperately to keep the full time employees working. What I don?t understand is why I have to furlough someone in order continue paying them.

You don?t have to if it?s up to you, it?s just help that?s there if you needed nothing to stopping you paying as usual. But if you?ve had a dramatic drop in business like the rest of us taking the government help and then topping up their pay to normal seems the best route of action if you can afford to.

But if you?ve had a dramatic drop in business like the rest of us taking the government help and then topping up their pay to normal seems the best route of action if you can afford to.

I agree, maybe I didn?t express myself properly, why do we have to furlough employees in order to get government help to pay them? If I could get the 80% government wage top up without furloughing them, I could keep the office open and ticking over at a loss and still service the clients still using us. Therefore using the minimal income generated to support the subbys the company employs , instead if, as I am having to, I lay of the casuals and maybe furlough the full time employees effectively mothballing the company, the 50plus subbys we normally Support are up the creek without a paddle.

To me I makes more sense for the gvnmt to help me with the office employees and intern we can help some, if not all, of the subbys.

I get that but I guess it comes down to do they trust business to not just operate as usual but pay 80% less staffing costs without good reason? Difficult to get the balance right.

It's also really cheeky that they've said 3 months but running from start of March when no one was shut til end of May. As most had worked most of the month they're offering 2 months really as it stands.

I don?t disagree balance is everything, I see they now intend to meet the NI and possibly employer pension contributions as well. I will say that Boris and his cohorts appear to be pulling out all the stops, I hope it?s enough to save the country from permanently sitting at home, as 80% of smaller businesses like me are desperately back peddling trying not to hit the ominous brick wall that just in front of us!! On a brighter note I?ve still got plenty of cigars and whisky, so I can smoke and drink myself into oblivion [emoji3]

It will be tough to rejuvenate the country maybe. I've just driven from salisbury to southampton and back on essential medical work and the main roads and motorways were empty. It was almost scary, certainly unnerving to see out mighty country stilled.

It would be nice to think we recover the good bits...no more easyjet's and Ryanair's polluting the air by taking pissheads to Romania for cheap beer and shags. We have a chance to reboot...I hope we take the opportunity but I fear we wont.
