Toothy Wrappers and Taste

I am sure others may have noticed - but whenever you smoke a cigar which has a degree of tooth showing in the wrapper, they always tend to be absolute flavour bombs and they just give that little bit more to the overall taste and flavour i.e. makes the enjoyment extra special - this covers the marques of both CC and NC cigars.

Are there certain cigar leaf/wrappers that have a natural tendency to be toothy in general? If so I need to seek these out....

My most recent toothy one was a little Bolivar DT I had from my SS. I smoked it on Christmas day - it was a glorious flavour bomb of a smoke.

Tooth refers to the tiny bubbles/bladders you can see or feel in the wrapper sometimes. They’re pretty common in high end NCs like ie. Padr?n cigars. They’re natural oil deposits in the leaf and contain higher amounts of essential oils, essential oils usually hold the perfume or flavor elements of a plant. All leaves have them, but in some they’re just very much more pronounced.

There are some leaves known and grown for their tooth but none of them are Cuban that I?m aware of. If it?s something you?re specifically looking for then Cameroon wrapper NCs is the way to go.

I suspect finding toothy Cubans is just box by box or a specific harvest that came out that way

I’d agree with this, I used to avoid them because of the way they look but I’ve found them to be disproportionately great cigars compared to cigars without. My experience applies to Cuban only.

When I hosted COTM last year there were quite a few toothy sticks in the box of PLPC I selected. Despite their 'ugly' appearance, I seem to recall they were well received in the flavour department.

Don't forget you're only talking wrapper. The binder and fillers can be toothy too, you can't see it.

The Cameroon NC leaf makes perfect sense, that?s probably why I really love the taste of Arturo Fuente Hemingway and Don Carlos range of cigars - as they use this wrapper in their blends

I've had a few and don't like the look of them. They've also not been extra good cigars.

Don't forget the wrapper constitutes a small amount to the overall taste. Although as the wrapper is in touch with the mouth you'll probably taste it directly as well as it's contribution to the smoke.

I?ve had quite a few that extreme [MENTION=13372427]ha_banos[/MENTION] over the years - toothy can range from fine tooth (as in your linked photo) to coarse tooth and anything in between
