  • Sharpening a xikar cutter

    Hey guys,

I want to give my cutter a bit of a sharpening. However, I don't seem to have a screwdriver to open that bloody thing. Anybody ever tried that?

That's a torx bit, maybe T10 or something.

I'm also interested in the best way to sharpen one though. You can deburr the edge with tin foil apparently, although never tried it

You'll need to pick up a set of torx drivers to take it apart, should be able to pick up a set easily enough from any tool shop or online cheap

Hm... I got a whole set of torx drivers, but none are small enough... have to google for a smaller one then...

You?ll need a fine Ceramic honing rod. The steel in cutters tends to be fairly soft so a ceramic honing rod is more than enough. As for taking it apart it?s up to you. If it?s a ballache to take apart, protect one blade with paper or something similar then put the rod through the hole at the most acute angle possible. With almost no pressure run the rod through the hole and along the exposed blade in one direction.

I could shave with my cutters! Stops any crushing when cutting as well. If the above doesn?t make sense drop me a PM, don?t want to nerd out too many people!

Can you not send it off to xikar for sharpening for free?

To Canada! Bet you'd end up paying duty on the way back

Really? I didn't realise it went that far. For the length of time they last it's not the end of the world to have to buy a new one to be fair.

I have two sharpening stones for small blades. Round one one side and straight for the others. One is like 300 grid and the other around 1000.

But I need to get the blade out. Need to find out what the torx size it is.

I don't mind keeping my tools sharp myself. My kitchen knives can shave hair when they are freshly sharpened, it brings me joy. [emoji5]

I'm the same with my kitchen knives, japanese whetstones and strop once a week. Just thought with the curved blade on the xikar it would be difficult to get a decent edge.
