Last 3rd of the smoke the tastiest?

hi all,

I find that the last 3rd of the cigar tastes the best. So would it work if I cut the cigar into 3 parts and smoked it? Would I get consistently good taste all throughout the smoke?

Interesting hypothesis.

The only way is to test it.

I suggest take a known nice large cigar, say a Cohiba Esplendido, and test it.

Chop 3 cigars into thirds, then superglue the thirds together. That'll give you 3 cigars of first third, second third and final third. You can then see if there's a difference.

This was the theory behind Nubs being short and fat. Obviously a stupid idea because you still have to smoke the first two thirds.

Just tried this theory...it was a bloody terrible idea! Ruined the cigar! I cut it into two pieces rather than 3....even then it spoiled both ends!

Agreed, I think that was PJ's point. Personally, I usually find the last third the least pleasant & that's one reason I prefer vintage cigars, as they have usually had time to mellow the last third. I used to leave a stub of over 2 1/2" on most cigars but now usually smoke down to 1 1/2 -1", less one very old cigars. Winston's view was that the second half of a Cuban, was as bad as non Cuban's & used to ditch very large stubs.

I really enjoy the first third, which is of course usually the lightest part, but which is where you can detect the more delicate flav's. That's why I always start off with a coffee, so beer or spirits don't over power them. The second third is where you get the cigar at it's 'best' all fav's IMHO. The last third can of course be great but I find cigars under 3yrs can be harsh & may turn bitter. If you spot a bitter taste I'd put it down. Yrs ago I'd try to keep smoking them, hoping the last puff wouldn't leave a bitter after taste but in my experience once it turns bitter, it only gets more so.

I think the 'meaty/cooling' taste I was picking up before (in a previous post a while ago) was actually the bitter, hot end of the cigar. And I agree with your last point. I've found that purging the cigar can help to a degree, and I sometimes find the super-boldness of flavour quite nice, but its days are numbered when it gets there. Usually in about the last inch or two.

I also find it more often/pronounced with NC's, possibly due to their fuller body to begin with, so if age plays a part in reducing those effects, maybe it would serve me well to let them get some more age first. Although it's difficult with the NC's being my go to sticks, disregarding the age, which is never really known anyway.

I'm with you here, and also not been able to enjoy too many aged cigars. If they do age from foot to cap (would make sense with air exchange at the open end) then hopefully in a few years I'll have some I can nub without getting too bitter

Just on an aside, a guy we got into conversation with in JJ's on Friday told us a story about his friend who asked if he could try a cigar for the first time. He decided to be generous and gave him a Cohiba Esplendido which he then cut in half to make smoking it easier!
