I read on another forum that Derrek has passed. I never knew him personally, but know he's been around here a while. I dont know any more other than he was battling cancer. I know he's Canada based. And I know he was posting back in July.

I appreciated his no nonsense posts

Jesus, that is a shock. Like you said, he was an infrequent poster, but when he did his words were a simple tonic that cut through the crap.
True BOTL, I remember him posting some of his collection earlier in the year on another forum, and the sheer number of untouched boxes of long ago discontinued cigars he had was staggering.

An amusing tale.... Derrek lived in a part of canada i know quite well. We chatted and for a while he fitted the description of a chap whose ex i dated for a while... nearly married her. Same spelling of His name, same surname, same part of the world. The guy in question was a gun toting man mountain of few words who looked four times as scary as he really was, which is understating it a touch, and he enjoyed a good stogie too. Weirdly this lad and i got on well but maybe because he scared the bejesus out of me and he knew it!

So DV and i got chatting on this topic, it would have been an hilarious/ frightening coincidence.... .turns out that while this all happened a long time ago, DV was in fact old enough to be her father... i dont remember how he put it, but it was short withering and hilarious. A funny, plain spoken, patient and wise BOTL that shall be missed.
