  • Its a bit funky

    Evening all,
I've just been going through my humidor and have noticed a funky smell along the lines of ammonia, not sure if its just my nose or something else ??

Fresh cigars give out an ammonia smell, you might hear this referred to as the “sick period”. This is part of the reason that many people like to age their smokes (especially Cubans)

I should probably clarify that it’s not all fresh cigars and that it relates to the tobacco being under fermented. If you can identify which cigar it’s coming from it would be best to leave that one a little while. I’ve heard dry boxing can help but I’ve not tried it personally.

Again thank you. At present its hard to identify, I've seperated my CC from my NC so ill monitor them over the next few days. I have a suspicion its one of the NC as the CC only got delivered today

It would be unusual to be an NC as they're usually made with properly aged tobacco in the first place

As PeeJay says it’s much more likely to be one (or more) of the CC.

So the mystery continues. I'll continue to monitor them. Thank you for the support.

Funny thing is NC are usually made from leaves that have gone through a fair bit more ageing than CC. It's actually more likely to be a new CC.

Have a schniff through the foot to see if you can spot the culprit.

Brilliant thanks going of the great info from all of you I've narrowed it down to 3 sticks based on purchasing dates so I'll put them to one side and see how i get on. Once again thank you for the wealth of experience.

The only time I had this issue, it was with an NC, a Nub. It smelled a bit like urine for a few weeks but was fine after that.
