  • Dipped in Honey

    Afternoon,

On my recent trip to Cuba we ended up in what sounds like a standard tourist trap tobacco "farm", whilst there the "grandad" rolled and gave us a couple of cigars that they tried to sell us afterwards. As well as this they were trying to sell honey which they encouraged us to dip our cigars into as supposedly it was what Che did, which is a new one to me.

This seemed to have had the result of an incredibly sweet taste on the mouth and virtually plugging the cigar which was already so mild it had no taste, is this just a tact to try and get people to buy cigars that otherwise wouldn't enjoy them?

    Definitely wouldn't recommend it!

I went out in the country side of the Vinales & visited a farmer, on a horse riding hack. He rolled an excellent cigar, that was a surprisingly good smoke & no one mentioned anything to accompany it except rather strong mojito's. I bought 10 CR's from the farmer & smoked them at home after a few months & they were very Monte like & certainly worth the few CUC I paid for them.

I think they got a bit confused with president Clinton dipping one in a honey (Monica)

Guess this is the difference between a real farmer rolling his own and many of the "farms" they have around Vinales that are just after tourist cash

Agreed. 2011 March Cuba 036.1.jpgHere's the view from the Farmers hut, where he rolled our cigars, made the Mojito's & we enjoyed them, watching the sun setting. We then had to get back on our horses & trek another few miles back home. Which was quite fun & the wife was somewhat squiffy after the Mojito!2011 March Cuba 038.1.jpgHere's some of the sticks 7 bought from the farmer & one from the Don Alejandro's finca (supplier of the VR wrappers) .2011 March Cuba 332.1.jpg

Those rolls look substantially better than what we were offered, admittedly it was interesting to see the leaves all hanging in the drying “shed” but it was very hard to know if any of it was real as such.

They did offer a fantastic Coco Loco which definitely left us squiffy as you call it!

How can this baccy not be 'real'? Surely the thing that makes the cigar 'Real' is how much of THIS leaf is in the rolled end result?? Or am I missing something?

No you're not missing anything they're clearly tobacco leaves drying but what's in the rolls they're then trying to sell to tourists aren't necessarily the same thing.

When I say real I mean as in a genuine item made to be enjoyed rather than making money off tourists.

They were very proud of how mild their smokes where but that left an essentially tasteless cigar, substantially less flavor and milder than any cigarette I've ever tasted.

Something wrong there, even CC's (Cuban Custom rolled) should be a flavoursome smoke.

I agree I've bought back 30 odd of Alex's and they're some of the nicest cigars I ever smoked and tried a couple other rollers in other shops which I've enjoyed but this I think was less about quality and more quick cash from unknowing tourists, as well as honey and coffee in plastic water bottles. The prices for all were incredibly high for what they were. ($30 for a bottle of rum and more for their cigars than from Alex)

Alex Glez is indeed a highly rated roller but even he can have an off day. I hadn't noticed when I took delivery of this batch that one of them had been patched, not seen that before.

And it was plugged. This is what I pulled out with the Perfecdraw to make it smokable

To add insult to injury it appears to have reached its sick period and was so bitter I binned it. The rest of the batch is sleeping till next year.

Ouch. Such a shame. Committing arson to an expensive stick is one thing, criminal damage quite another
