Serious question...

Well, let's be honest...the 'serious' question was " should I leave her?". If that was indeed the serious question, which seems to have become an elephant in the room, the answer cannot really be one delivered by consensus. I mean, a marriage so thin that her moaning about the neighbours getting a whiff of baccy smoke can break it is really no marriage at all - but IF that is the issue then I suspect there are other issues as well. So, the serious answer would be "no, but do find a marriage guidance counsellor and sort this thing out." . Of course if the marriage is that weak then the stresses of her going self employed will almost certainly kill it anyway, after a lot of rows and tears. Not a nice future.
However, I suspect (I very much hope) that the serious question was not really a serious question at all. (Not having PM means I cannot actually ask him, I hope someone else has). I suspect it was a tongue in cheek 'serious' question. In which case the answer is rather as I first proposed - it's your house too and as delightful and lovely as the Mrs is, she's got no right to moan on about these things which don't concern her, in fact I'm surprised she isn't sticking up for the Mr instead. He either tells the neighbours to get stuffed or his wife, or both. Smoking in the garden isn't yet a crime. If they choose to close their windows, well that's why they have hinges. Buy the smokes and enjoy them. And I hope he enjoys them indoors when the weather turns foul again: I quite enjoy the morning-after aroma.
Sorry to have spoken about you in the third person all the time: I feel rather self conscious discussing such things in public.David

Is that the best we can do?
Because let's face it, that's nothing new.

If your neighbours have the same smoke detectors in their home then perhaps your lovely wife has a point! I just hope that they aren't connected to a sprinkler system otherwise you will be in the doghouse if you set one off. Your biggest problem is that the detector won't be able to tell the difference between an NC and the sofa going up in flames - another reason to switch to CC's
