  • Thoughts on The Lanesborough's Garden Room

I thought a brief review of The Garden Room at The Lanesborough Hotel, London, might be of interest to some forum members.

Myself and hubby visited on Wednesday evening, arriving about 6.00 p.m. There are plenty of doormen, staff and security around to point you in the right direction. The Garden Room is down the stairs at the end of a long corridor and is very claustrophobic. I'm not entirely sure how the outdoor area actually qualifies legally as there is no roof area open to the sky, and the garden walls are in line with the edge of the roof. However, I'm sure it suits the London Chamber of Commerce to have such a gathering point for businessmen and a blind eye is turned?

The actual smoking area is not very large, but is extremely comfortable. The humidor is well stocked and the staff member who showed us the cigars was very proud of the collection. I can't recall seeing any non-Cubans, and the cigars are laid out into three distinct areas, normal 'every day' Cubans (hubby chose a Partagas No. 2 at ?25), the limited edition and aged Cubans which from memory were between ?75 up to the hundreds, and a very fine box of Behikes which looked fabulous.

Drinks were good quality without being outstanding, and I guess prices are similar to other 5* hotels in the area. Unfortunately not very imaginative for those having to avoid alcohol, though the staff did make me a very pleasant juice mix. There is also a minimum spend of ?25 per head which isn't hard to achieve. The neighbouring table had not cottoned on to the minimum spend and decided to have another drink rather than pay ?25 each for one drink - handled very discreetly by the staff.

Clientele seemed to be mostly foreign businessmen.

Overall, pleasant enough and it's great to have somewhere to sit and enjoy a cigar in fine surroundings. However, my favourite place to relax with a drink and cigar remains The Hemingway Terrace bar in Paris and value-wise in the UK I prefer the Hotel du Vin cigar shacks, though of course, perhaps one should not judge such venues on 'value' as it is a relative score.

We would probably return if we find ourselves with an hour or so spare in central London.

Thanks, Rhiannon. I used to go to the Library Bar there, when one was able to smoke in there, and it was a fabulous venue. Unfortunately it has now lost its atmosphere (both literally and metaphorically); I have been meaning to try the garden room for a while, but haven't got around to it yet.

Jimmy, your post reminds me of something that is lacking at The Garden Room, and it is 'atmosphere'. It's pleasant enough but definitely lacking that certain something that makes a place special. Perhaps it is better later in the evenings?

Thanks for posting this Rhianon, I haven't been in since thay refurbished it.

I would add a couple of points, I am "told by those who know" that the Manager is the best Cigar Salesman in London and his clientel can certainly afford their prices.

I believe that one of the new features is under floor heating for the colder evenings.

One final point to consider before you all rush in there. It is very small and they will give preference to hotel residents. I believe that as therer are very few hotels in London with similar facilities so many "high rolling Cigar smokers" and even some Mexicans, are heading for the hotel from their previous haunts so you may well arrive and find that you can't get a seat.

I will pop in and take some photographs in the next week or so and add them to get you all properly salivating

          Giuseppe Ruo,

Known to Londons cigar aficionados as the 'Puff Daddy' - apparently...!?!

Cheers Rhiannon, I have been wanting to visit there for a while now.

Might check it out on the Sunday after the Mega HERF, before leaving for the Great North.

The Lanesborough Garden Room is certainly worth a visit, but i found that SOME of their collection, which was well kept in their humidor, was overpriced - i have no problem with paying extra when enjoying a good night night out, but when a cigar is double the price, it puts my back up a bit. The service is of a high standard, and its a comfortable place to sit in when its cold out, as they have managed to design it that it keeps warm. I have to agree though, there isnt masses of atmosphere there, though i enjoyed myself as was with "interesting" company.

I would definately advise that you visit there, even if only once, as it is worth doing - but i would say: Take your own smokes and drink the ?25 minimum charge.
