Tar build up

Hi all,

I've smoked a lot of cigars over the last 13 years and discovered recently that I prefer to use a 7mm punch rather than any other cutter. Tonight I smoked an upmann Anejados in the afternoon followed by a JL2 after my evening meal. While smoking the JL2 I've had a crazy amount of tar build up at the cap of the cigar which up to now I've never come across.

My question to you all is: is this common? I've read a lot about people not favouring a punch due to tar build up but tonight is the first time I've come across it. Have I just been lucky or is this rare?

I've been using a punch for about a year now.

I'd appreciate your feedback.

The only time I had significant tar build up was an old Monte 2. Straight cut. Was the only one from the box to do this. Very rare.

I use both straight cut and a 9mm punch can't say as I've had tar build up.

I tend to use a punch as my preferred cut. I have only come across major tar build up once with a cigar and that was a QdO 50, not experienced it with anything since that cigar.

I have moved to the punch last Summer after Steve gave me a cigar that he had pre punched. I only cut Panetelas and Piramides now. I have a tar build up from time to time, maybe one cigar out of 50 of so. If that happens I just cut the cigar and go on smoking.

I used to cut but now punch any stick above 40RG, mainly because I prefer to control the draw. Only experienced tar a couple of tar build up, frankly too few to worry about. If it doesvhappen the cut at the top of cap & should smoke OK. I think this is more common in fresher cigars, which is perhaps why it doesn't bother me.

I've had this problem in the past mainly with my punch....I just end up cutting it after with a straight cutter.
