Yeah, the prices in the shops are fixed.

Our tobacco taxes are not the same as Germany.

Of course not, quite different in fact. However, given our taxes most cigars should be ?1-2 more expensive than Germany, prices would be comparable and people more likely to buy in the UK.

Ok, if we are concerned about the legality of my friend purchasing them for me, lets not worry about that bit. Lets say I was going to go with him the next time he went to Seville (which is December and isn't completely out of the question anyway).
So the question then becomes, can this shop owner order in what I want, and what's the quality like when I do get it?

Any retailer worth their salt will endeavour to get an order in for a guaranteed sale if its available at their supplier and the quality in Spain will be the same as here.

I think this is a difficult one. The majority of my stock i got from abroad, i don't have a particularly large stock but i don't smoke many a year. I have bought sticks in the uk but only the odd single that i really wanted. I want to support uk retailers but the prices restrict me, your talking nearly double the price on some sticks. They sell less (or do they) so pure economies of scale has may come into it. Barring this forum i only know one person that smokes cigars, and that's every now and again at weddings, new year etc.

I would love to know how much tax is added to them in comparison to overseas vendors. If i am looking to buy a lot in will wait until im abroad or buy from an overseas vendor. Fingers crossed i have had no issues so far.

as others have said sometimes its actually cheaper to jump on a plane for a day trip. I was looking to go on a day trip to amsterdam in the new year and the flight was about ?70 quid return. So if i go and buy a couple of boxes it would work out and i will of had a nice day out!

I think the tax is ?2.70 per 10g and then usual VAT on the whole lot. So I think cheaper stuff works out worse because it still weighs the same as expensive stuff. RyJ 4 is 4.10 euro and like 12 quid here, where as Bolivar belicoso finos are 11.20 euro and 18 quid here. So you see how the differential is smaller on the more expensive cigar.

You are right, if the taxes are applied by price and not by weight, cheaper cigars would still be cheaper.
But expensive cigars would definitly be impossible.

its crazy isn't it. makes me wonder how long uk businesses can withstand it never mind grow, maybe explains why there are so few b&m vendors around towns etc. There is one that i know of in my town and when i visited i was greeted with over priced, dry smokes..not ideal really.

its quite ironic in some ways...nail them for tax in the hope they boost revenue from the sales or prevent people from buying them for health reasons (bolloks) so most people buy elsewhere and they kill the industry in the uk..well done!c

Lots of other industries are suffering the same... especially with online shops, fast and cheap shipping etc. I have bought motorcycle gear from Germany and France, the downside being there are no local shops left to try stuff on.

Reading between the lines .... am guessing import duties / restrictions are prohibitive for you blokes in the U.K ?

Excise on tobacco here in Oz is about 500 pounds sterling per kg / 2.2 pounds ( only have $ on keypad ) and some parcels make it through without inspectin. Yay !
