• Why do you smoke?

I was dead set on enjoying a cigar yesterday after finishing work. For those of you that don't know, I now work a lot from home and my studio backs directly onto the garden, so is a constant reminder of smokes-gone-by!

Anyhow, when my final clients left, it was almost dark, the temperature had dropped a little and I found myself wondering what I could smoke quickly. What did I go for? Nothing. It occurred to me that if I was going to cram in a smoke before it either a) got too cold or b) too dark, there really was no point in lighting up at all. I then realised that I smoke to relax, enjoy a little time out, to challenge myself to find nuances and flavours or simply to reflect on the day. Cigar smoking is not an addiction (for me at least) and I think that puffing through a stick as quickly as possible would point to addiction or at least the need for a nic-hit or something akin to it.

So, why do you smoke? Is it for relaxation etc or through habit? perhaps a bit of both or none of the above?

I agree with you K444HEP. I tend to smoke towards the latter half of the week to relax and unwind with a few nice beverages. It's like a treat to myself as part of getting through another week at work.

When you work shifts the end of the week can literally be any day

Like you, cigars for me are relaxation and a chance to unwind. They are almost like a reward or treat of sorts. After a successful, busy day or the end of a project or the like.

If I smoked as often as I think I might like to, i'd burn through the collection in no time. For me it's similar to @K444HEP if the stars align to enable a wind-down and to enjoy then I fill my boots. If not, I tend to walk away. A small number, but too many, times I have found myself looking at the last third of a stick thinking what a waste.... because 'life' had popped up unexpectedly and destroyed the vibe. Its a relaxation thing for sure. A small window of enjoyment, bought wisely!

For me, it?s purely a relaxation device and when coupled with fine company and a quality beverage, I can?t think of a better way to unwind.

I work hard play hard, always have, I've found in my latter mature years that has meant enjoying the finer things in life. To me a fine cigar is pure indulgence, although it has been many years since my first I still enjoy each cigar with relish and a somewhat smug satisfaction.

                  It’s not about the cigars

it’s about friends (brothers) while smoking cigars

Interesting responses, chaps. I suppose there must be a certain amount of passion too, otherwise we wouldn't be on this fine forum, chewing the fat over the many different topics here!

For me it's about having some 'me time'. Being self employed there always seems to be something work related to do - emails, estimates, invoices, materials to order etc. but when I sit down with a cigar I can switch off for an hour or two.

I like the flavours, the smells. The way my palette is coated. I like how I'm buzzing slightly after a cigar. I like how it gives me some uninterrupted time. Almost meditative relaxation. I find it therapeutic.

For me it’s the anticipation of what the cigar will be like, the whole experience on the senses. Enjoying what the experience brings and making time to relax and reflect on life’s events. It’s such a relaxing thing to do, wherever you are and when ever you can.

I find the OP's question quite hard to answer. As a lifetime non-smoker (of cigarettes) I have absolutely no idea why or how I came to enjoy cigars, though I have a feeling that there is something 'special' about the whole process that I can't put my finger on.

For me it's about unwinding after a tough week at work. I've just started getting into this enjoyable hobby and exploring different flavours, hoping my palate improves over time..
