The other thing to bear in mind, is that you might find you actually prefer the taste of a younger stick! Some that smoke well young for me include: Trinidad Reyes, Hoyo Petit Robusto, H. Upmann Half Corona... I think I may have started a thread asking for recommendations for cigars that perform well without age, see if you can find it, there were some good options, most of which worked for me.

Mr Puropunch, I wouldn't worry too much about the age of singles; just assume anything being sold in the UK these days are less than 12months old, unless you find a small B&M with low turnover on the more unusual lines. Even then you'd be pushed to find anything more than 2 or 3 yrs old. Any older & they'd be telling you & upping the price!
As I assume you're expecting to smoke them within a month or two so it's not really a problem, you can always sniff the box & if they smell of ammonia chose from another.
PS I wouldn't rush into buying boxes until you have tried a wide range of CC's & then pick a fav or two to buy as your first boxes. Good luck!

cheers simon for the sound advice. I will definitely not rush into buying boxes and top of my list at the moment are the nub connecticut 460's. I absolutely love them. I only smoke 1-2 cigars a week max so a 50 cab for example would last me a year if i only smoked them. I am in for the long haul however but trying to be selective and hold myself back to buying 1's and 2's to try. As i get through hem im keeping a list of must have smokes that i will stock up on. A Long road this but worth the time and effort....

Cheers K44HEP. that didn't actually occur to me. I will have a search for the thread sounds like its worth a read through. Question still stands to a degree..how do i know if i prefer a younger stick or older..when we dont really know the age. funny old game this isnt it!

p.s..the upmann half corona is a great little smoke. I bought 5 on the assumption they would be good. And they are. but dam!! how old was it??!! lol

Just a note of caution, you smoke a couple a week so a cab of 50 would last a year? I beg to differ sir, it most definitely won't. Once you have that cab sitting there you will find more frequent opportunities to indulge & then there's sharing with like minded friends & fellow members. 50 cabs only last a year or more when you have a 'decent' collection & you are only smoking a few of each box per year. I have been smoking some of mine for 5yrs+, interesting to note how they continue to improve as time passes but I suggest buying 2 boxes of 25 instead to give a choice & if you can find boxes of 10's even better.

That's an interesting point but the the moment, as an ex-smoker (i vape now, ill get my coat!..taxi for puro!!) i really am limiting myself. I am relatively young at 30 and i stopped smoking cigarettes for a reason. I really enjoy cigars but i dont want it to become a daily occurrence. I might change, hey i came onto the forum with a little desktop and a couple of cigars, that's quickly changed i now have a decent cabinet still small by some standards but a big step for me.

again this brings me back to being quite selective about what i buy long term and do i really need to invest ?000's or ?0000's in something i only indulge in every now and again. And to be honest i dont really know anyone that i can share cigars with. I think most my mates think im mad ..

end of the day as long as they are stored correctly as time goes on and my tastes inevitably change maybe i would move onto different sticks..10 boxes could be a good shout! ...no not 10 boxes!! boxes of 10

i do prefer the chunkier one ...the best cigar i smoked was a cohiba robusto..an no i didnt know the age lol then i tried a nub, my word.

We?re all learning, at the core of our hobby is a handmade product that is subject to many variables. Growing conditions, weather, tobacco strain, wrapper leaf, roller, blend, age, humidity etc. You will get better with trial and error knowing what you like more and what you like less but the experiment and experience is a big part of the fun (to me at least). Try not to worry too much about it and enjoy the ride

As @K44HEP says some are good young, depends on personal taste/preference. I brought a box of 2017 HDM palmas extras and I'm thinking of ordering more but I there's other ( like the Monte 4) which I love at the 3 year stage. Its all trial and error like everyone has mentioned to discover what you like
