  • Health warning stickers on EU cigar boxes are optional

Just found this. The stickers on cigar boxes don't have to be there according to the EU directive. So thanks governments.

Totally pointless. Can't get them off without damaging the prints.

"The Tobacco Products Directive (2014/40/EU) ... requires cigarettes, roll-your-own tobacco and waterpipe tobacco to carry combined health warnings consisting of a picture from the EU picture library, a text warning and information on stop smoking services. EU countries may also choose to apply the same requirements to other tobacco products such as cigars, cigarillos and pipe tobacco. The warnings should cover 65% of the front and back of packages. Tobacco products with combined health warnings must also carry a general warning and information message." - ref. https://ec.europa.eu/health/tobacco/law/pictorial_en

The gateway on my work network prevents me expressing my view of this in the appropriate Anglo-Saxon manner!

They are a bunch of idiots.

France are the worst, you can hardly see anything except for those darn stickers. It was a nice surprise to see that Portugal adds only a small sticker on the top of the box.

I've had boxes from America with the stickers on the cellophane sealing the box, great idea.

Yes it is. Or they should use that sticky plastic film that's on the BHK boxes. Put in on all CC boxes and the problem is solved.

All European countries have to have health warning stickers of some kind on all tobacco products.
The recent changes require at least 65% health warning coverage on tobacco products, yes with the option of excluding cigars and pipe tobacco.
Many European countries have gone with the 65% coverage on all tobacco products.
The UK would have had plain packaging on cigars starting this year had it not been for petitions from people in the cigar industry.
Ireland, despite petitions to the contrary, is going with full plain packaging from September.
Many governments apply blanket rules to tobacco as it's cheaper and also they know that cigarette companies will do whatever possible to exploit packaging and regulation loopholes wherever they can.
For example, I know that UK cigar retailers get regular phone calls from cigarette companies asking what defines a "premium cigar". It's fairly obvious why they are asking that.

I've noticed this in France - quite often the stickers cover the date and code entirely - very annoying!

Thats certainly some interesting news - as some have said why can't boxes be wrapped in plastic and the stickers go on there. I know some pipe tobacco brands make a cardboard sleeve to take the warnings but the tin underneath is just the branded tin as normal which is quite a nice thing
