  • Humidor cabinets & humidity levels

Now we know I'm a bit obsessive about this and have a couple of hygrometers in the mini cabinette...

Draw at the top is registering low 60'sRH. Bottom is registering 70%RH

I though I'd sussed and read that humidity rises? Perhaps not in cooler temperatures? I'd just like a more uniform distribution of humidity for the sake of my OCD...

Do I need to add a fan to blow around every now and again?!

    Will it stabilise?

Its very full in there ...

    Thanks!
    B.

Are the hygrometers digital and if so, are they calibrated to the same level? I only ask as I?ve realised one of mine registers 2% over the other. Easy test is to get ziplock bag and out a cup in it with water in. Then put the two hygrometers in there and zip it up. The humidity will get up to 100% in a few days and you?ll be able to see what they are reading.

Another thought, are you using something like Heartfelt beads in there? They manage to keep mine at 65RH+- 1 whatever the weather, they are fantastic as a long term investment.

I've about (ahem) 5 hygrometers on 3 levels in there. I've measured each one and noted how far out they are. I even rotate them. I'm used to their readings. But they do always read lower in the top draw.

Are you using boveda or something else? If the source of humidity is at the bottom it?s natural they bottom would be a little higher unless of course you do a little electrical tinkering with a PC fan and have it blowing upwards for a minute every hour or so. You wouldn?t want it going constantly as you?d risk the drying effect air movement has. You?d obviously need to hard wire a timer into the circuit to do that but I?ve seen it done without too much issue on the World Wide Web.

I think I?m going to make this modification to my own humidor in the not too distant future.

Yes...see a fan to regulate the air around.

On eBay there's and outs fan I think I read I blows every 15minz.

But I'm trying to make my own using relay and computer fan.

I'll bet this is an easy bolt onto the hygrometer project....

Hi HaBanos, You are correct we all tend to overly worry about small changes in humidity (it's one of the most obvious differences between newbies & more experienced members). First get your set up correct & then let it run itself. First important point is to season your humi' correctly before putting your previous sticks inside. Then chose your humi' deivce, I use a mix of wet gel crystals, beads & Boveda packs. My reasoning for this is that I am away from home for 3-4wks & there's no one to tend them whilst I am away. I find by using this mix, they cope pretty well for 3wks+.

This will depend on the seal of your humi' & ambient temp affects the amount of moisture the air is able to support i.e. cold rooms in the winter will struggle to maintain 66%-70%. I do have a fan in my Ariostocrat 'Cave' & yes it does help but I use a time that has it come on for a single 15mins session a day. works fine.

Biggest errors: Opening Humi to often to check Hydrometer, gaze at cigars, putting 65% beads in & wondering why it won't go to 68%+, not putting enough beads/ packs in for the size of humi/ the amount of cigars. If using poly' boxes/Coolidors, add some cedar from old boxes ect & that will help stabilize humidity.

Your question has inspired me to get the bits ordered. 2x 12v brushless computer fan, adjustable power adapter (likely running on 3v as it will not stress the fans), and a plug timer.

Change out of ?17 for the lot.

When it all arrives and I get myself sorted, I?ll post some pics. Looks like an easy enough job though.

Mains with a ribbon cable which should fit nicely through the seal.

Hmmm boveda pack in a ziplock reading way over. So much for humidity control then [emoji23]

The live reading is still in there today so you can see for yourself!
