last summer I enjoyed a Hoyo DC from the late nineties... a hangover from my first foray into cuban cigars. It was a joy. It was super smooth and easy going - I was concerned it would be domineering and hard work as such a lengthy smoke (and I rarely go for something of that scale), but was quite the opposite. It may have been over-aged for some and they might have found it bland, but I found it light and smooth.

I thought the same about the 50 cabs, but since then I have the two dress boxes so I should have just got the cab ... I will get one for my collection eventually, I am determined to age some of these for 15 + years!

Well I hope you'll be lighting up a 'winning stick' too?

Not trying to 'Black Cat you' but rather back you up Emarsee, I have had Hoyo DC's from th e'80's & I'd say they were medium not light med as Hoyo's are usually classifed.

Not sure what being black catted is, but i dont mind at all! This stick was from c'97/8 and it was really the scale i was worried about. Age had mellowed it but it had good flavours.

Sorry, 'a Black Cat' is a RN expression, meaning someone who always tries to out do everything you do e.g. you have a new car, he's got one & so has his wife! What I meant was that although I can understand how you noted late 90's Hoyo's have aged well (perhaps better than current stocks will manage), going back to the 80's I think the difference may have been even more marked. The DC's I smoked, helped me understand why the Hoyo DC had been so popular, whereas modern version to me seems too mild for such a large stick.

Tobacco is changing all the time, around the turn of the century, different strains were planted - being more pest & disease resistant, good news for the farmers & Cuban ecomony ut perhaps not as great for those few of us that do enjoy well aged cigars.

Ah ha! Every day is a learning day. It had been a time since i smokedanything of that scale and i did so with trepidation, but lounging on a terrace in the sun with a bottle of madeira, some soft drinks, and the kids in the pool, convinced me that what the heck else could beat it- it was a good gamble!

your comments have given me to pause and think on the other comparable smokes of 'then' and now, and i would agree with you. Also the marketing and production seems to be more about driving consumption now. No bad thing as its demand that sustains the industry, but i have always seemed to prefer either absolutely 'green' or that touch older with decent aging.
