I think it's due to the price and age point.

        • Four interesting weeks there gents, it's certianly been fun; I have something in mind on a similar line but I'll give it a week or two before starting it.

Two surprises for me, that San Cristobel got in the top ten, certianly a lesser brand for me than VR & others it finished above. The only one I have really enjoyed was the El Morro. Secondly, that Cohiba got such a 'spanking.' I can only assume this is due to the price, which as we all now is 35%+ above similar vitolas in the Habanos range. In my scoring system I do include value for money & there's good arguments for not doing that but I think value for money is an important factor anything we buy.

Standard Cohiba's don't therefore come at the top of my score list, going from 88pts for Sig III & IV to 91 for Esplen' 92pts for the Sig VI. Recent EL's may also have knocked the image of Cohiba, as some what extreme pricing. However my message to you knockers, is that to ignore Cohiba & you could be missing out on some of your best ever smokes. I have only awarded two cigars 100pts & one was an ordinary production Cohiba Robusto, all be it was from '96. An amazing cigar that I realised was going to be a 100pointer after just an inch or so in. Luckily it was gifted to me but I would would have happily paid ?50 for it before trying it & alot more for another having tried it. Then just last week I had a Coronas Especiales from my Seleccion box & have given it 99pts but if the others are as good I'll raise that to 100, the extra point being for consistancy.

I have had wonderful 'ordinary' Esplen's & Sig VI's & a couple of rather nice Behike 52's but I wouln't be buying anymore 52's as there are better cigars around, especially on the vintage market for less!

But good game, enjoyed it. 3 cheers for Hoyo!

          • Punch and Cohiba are both marcas that deserve to be higher - there are some outstanding smokes from Punch, and I think Cohiba get such a bashing simply because of price, IMO they offer a unique smoke and when aged well are very difficult to beat. CCs generally need at least a couple of years to shine, with Cohiba its just a bit longer

Whilst I also appreciate that the price is mostly because of the brand, they also go through a different process, which must also add to the price . That's what I'm telling myself anyway

I think I also need to accept next time that it isn't worth try to save Cohiba - it will go early anyway

                • bravo... what an unexpexted result, and the order or merit from sheppsea was a fascinating read. More experimentation required in the cigar choices I think!

Go for a DC if you have the time. How old are yours?

Still rather young - I have a box that are from 2016 and a box from 2017, I have had a couple from the 2016 last year and they smoked nice, but hoping more flavours develop over the years as i know they're good at ageing!

Have the time? I'll MAKE the time for the winning stick!

Yeah, I have a few Hoyo DC's and mine are from 2016 as well. Never committed to a box. I love those 50 cabs, but the price....

Of course you'll make time for the winning stick!

I thought the same about the 50 cabs, but since then I have the two dress boxes so I should have just got the cab ... I will get one for my collection eventually, I am determined to age some of these for 15 + years!

Well I hope you'll be lighting up a 'winning stick' too?
