  • CASC - New website and new pricing - (Just look at the Behikes!)

I'm a bit gobsmacked here. Looks like they're being quite aggressive on the pricing front.
Anything that helps to address massive UK prices and alter perceptions downwards is a good thing IMHO.

For example BHK 52/54/56 price comparison between CASC and another leading UK vendor
    Casc . - ?450 / ?550 / ?630
    Other . -?900 / ?1200 / ?1300
    Definitely worth a look

Everything out of stock at those prices listed. Gets them traffic I suppose.

Again, i think this shows how much is truly taken by the tax man, and how much is inflated by other suppliers due to brand/scarcity...

I reckon for all tax IS high in the UK, a lot of suppliers probably hide their 'healthy' profit margins under the guise of the taxman...
Only the impossible is worth the effort.

          Let's see if they honour.

Prices of other stock seems not so great.

Perhaps using these premium products as a loss leader?

Some of their prices are excellent for a UK shop. I bought Talisman from them (spotted and recommended by a UKCF member). Their customer service was spot on, delivery was quick by RMSD.

The tax on those high value cigars is not much at all, the tax hits the lower value cigars much harder. So a Talisman will have roughly ?4 of excise duty in the price, and VAT on top of that. But a Quintero Favoritos will have ?3 of excise duty + VAT. So you see the higher value cigars price is virtually unnaffected by excise duty, the price is set by H+F making huge profits, and then retailers on top of that marking up by extortionate amounts.

This is probably me being a bit dim

so if cgars sell a talisman for ?130 and casc selling at ?47 the tax for the cigar is that same but the vat amount will be different correct?

or would the tax be reflected in the price they are selling at?

Yes the VAT will be different on the overall price. ?47 cigar at retail must be about ?39.50 list price before VAT is added. However I am not sure how the import system works, if H+F pay excise duty + VAT like we do at time of import, and then VAT is charged again in the shop we would end up being paying tax on a tax on a tax.

The HMRC import duty is on weight. And is part of the price H&F as importers must pay as mentioned EMS blah blah.

VAT is added to the price the shop wants to sell at.

                    ( H&F price + shop addon ) + 20% VAT

So VAT paid = price paid - (price paid / 1.2)

Yes, but do H+F pay VAT as well on the excise duty at time of import like we do? Who knows.

And I bet the cigars are weighed too. If a naughty box is seized they weigh the package and charge you that weight's worth

                          Did I not mention weight?

The weight of the boxes is included in the process I bet unless H&F have special dispensation with HMRC!!

Yes H&f pay vat on the import but they claim that vat back. They then sell to retailer who has to pay vat. But they also claim that back. Then the retailer charges vat to the normal punter who cant claim vat back

I had some monte especials charged extra, they had taken the cigars out of the box and weighed them. I could tell as the price was almost exactly as I calculated based on cigar weight, and they had broken nearly all of the pigtails on the caps in the process! I have heard horror stories of people being charged ?200 for 10 cigars etc, its so random I guess it depends which customs officer you get on the day.
