I'm not sure if I am alone but I really struggle to identify any distinct flavors when smoking a cigar. I'm the same with wine. In both cases I know what i like and what I don't, but when I read a review saying something like 'In the first third I got cinnamon, hazelnut and chocolate notes and in the second third tarmac, ear wax and ferrero rocher . . .' I just don't get it.

Definitely not alone mate, I can't say I'm able to pick out half the flavours mentioned in an average review. Some people do have better palates for detecting the more subtle nuances. Retrohale is something I just can't do by maybe see if that gives you anything more?
Maybe we'll develop in time but as long as we're enjoying the time keep on smoking

I certainly do get hints of flavours, it more often than not is a general profile rather than specific flavours. I do retrohale every few puffs and I find that helps or at least changes the experience drastically. Realistically though it all tastes and smells like cigar smoke. Just sometimes it might tingle the senses in a way that reminds me of a certain flavour, it is never going to taste exactly like chocolate or unicorn tears. I can in red wine also but not coffee.

I have to agree with Mr Vickery, most of the time I get nice burning tobacco taste or nasty burning tobacco taste but every now and again it reminds me of something else like nuts or coffee. Even more rarely I get a distinct burst of flavour that makes me think wtf? How can burning leaves taste like that? What you are eating or drinking can also affect your palate. I can remember one summer's day when my wife and I were enjoying some fancy popcorn that was making my cigar tste like marzipan - the holy grail for me.'Cigars are a hobby, cigarettes an addiction'

Its fascinating that smelling an unburnt stick can illicit a lot of different flavours. Anything from barnyard to honey. It stands to reason that this complexity will carry through to the sparked up flavours.
I generally dont get the complexity of flavour that some seem to be able to find.... but unquestionably can pick out a couple of distinct flavours. And rather like @PeeJay above, I have experienced a sudden 'hit' of a major flavour in the middle of a stick - this has been as diverse as parma violet and cedar.
While I can quite easily identify different smells and tastes in wine, I have genuinely struggled to find real complexity in cigars. Often it's also about the softness or smoothness of the smoke that I notice over and above distinct tastes. Now that you mention it, this thread reminds me of a passage I read recently in don TJ's journals. He postulated that the art of identifying puro flavors is really more of what flavors come to mind as you puff your puro (burnt rye toast, for example), rather than the actual taste you get. Otherwise, all you will taste is burning tobacco leaves. Oh sure, maybe you'll occasionally taste pencil shavings and dirt...but mostly smoldering leaves.
